Precisely -- thank you....you just made my point....and that is why we need a registration system.
I know what I suggested may be hard to do, without a registration system....but you are the ones who do NOT want a registration system...so therefore it is up to you guys to solve this problem of how to stop people from impersonating others and stealing their usernames.
...you make me chuckle at times.....people are saying that the forum is not broke...so don't fix it....well they are wrong...it is broke....as the recent tagstube threads illustrated....the forum is wide open to abuse by trolls and troublemakers who can impersonate other people's usernames.

By Malvineous - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Wed 30/06/10 14:14:09 GMT What is an "IP control"? There is no conceivable way with the Internet Protocol (v4 at least!), with its structured numbering scheme that drives packet routing, to assign unique IP addresses to people. That would be like giving everyone their own postcode that still finds you when you're staying in a hotel on the opposite side of the world. (Phone carriers are smarter about this with mobiles, as you can indeed dial a UK mobile number even if that phone is being used abroad.)
You're thinking of *passwords* ...
Name stealing has nothing to do with being anonymous and everything to do with being able to type in any name you please. If you want to protect a username you register it and lock it with a password. That has the awesome benefit of working regardless of which computer you're on and regardless of whether your home broadband IP address is static or dynamic, or behind a Web proxy system.
Likewise, why would we start appending secret characters to the end of a username? Why not .... use a password?
Please, gentlemen, let's not over-engineer something so simple. |

By MK - wamtec@comcast.net Wed 30/06/10 07:48:18 GMT I never said that people should post using their real names or email addresses....when did I say that !!
Of course, people should have their own privacy usernames or nicks or name handles.....which can afford them all the privacy they need.
I just said that mutiple people should not be allowed to post using the generic name "anonymous"....cos that is name stealing too....i.e. when you allow 20 or 30 people all to post under the same name "anonymous"....that is a form of name stealing too...cos every user should have their own unique username....and we should not be allowing dozens of people just to all post using the same generic name handle called "anonymous".
All I am saying is that everybody should use their own unique username....and they can set up their own privacy name handles as they please...and those should not be used by anybody else except them.....and posters should not hide behind the generic name handle of "anonymous". Nobody should use their real names or be forced to display their email address....just create your own unique username, and install ip controls to prevent other people from impersonating you and stealing your username, and don't let dozens of different posters all use the same username called "anonymous"....cos the only reason people want to use the generic "anonymous" name...is because they want to cause trouble or "hit and run" and hide within a big group of anonymous posters.

In reply to Message (45004.12) Keep it as it is, but consider this idea to prevent name stealing
By MaK - Wed 30/06/10 00:47:32 GMT I think that what makes this forum special is that it is completely open. Please keep it that way. It is easy to see that you are doing things right just by looking at the number of posts compared to the other two English forums.
MK and others have said that they don't like anonymous posts. If this is the case, why don't they post under their full names? Wetlook is about sex and very few want their e-mail address or real name be mixed up with that in a public forum.
The biggest problem is name stealing. Let me suggest a very simple solution. Each name should be followed by for example 6 characters, which are not shown in public - for example MaK12Fr3a where only MaK is shown. The only way you can post in that name is if you know the last 6 characters. If you try to post as MaK123456, a simple look up in a data base can tell you that MaK12Fr3a is already in use and reject the new name.

In reply to Message (45004) Forum Login + Feedback
By Nigel - nigel@wetlook.com Tue 29/06/10 10:54:32 GMT Website: www.wetlook.com Regarding the idea of a "Thanks" button: 1 as most people already do, you can reply with a thumbs up or many other icons etc
>We have all these message icons that folks can use on this forum...most of which are silly and irrelevant.....but not one single icon for "thanks"....how ironic.
See above ! ?
2 I started working on this sometime ago, but to work properly, it requires users to be logged in, otherwise it is too easy for people to cheat, and vote for their own posts, even with IP checking, this is easy enough to get around.
So, we need a login system here ! At least that is what some people want to see. Personally, and I get a lot of good feedback about this, I like the forum being completely open. Yes it gives me a headache at times, but I think most people agree it gives a far fresher feel to the place, and encourages more posts.
Therefore, what I started working on last year was an optional registration. This allows people to reserve their posting name (possibly more than 1) and will then mark posts by registered users with a star (for example). Registered users would still have the option of posting 'anonimously' or using another, non-registered name. Registered users would be able to give "thumbs up" (thanks) points or "thumbs down" points to any post. Non-registered users can still post, but I was going to use a smaller font for their posts, and still allow thumbs up/down votes, but weight them as necessary to avoid abuse. I would then also have the option to disable postings from non-registered users if and when necessary.
Unfortunately, work on all this stalled, as I have lots of real (paid) work to do. I can't remember the last time that anybody bothered to make a donation towards running the forum... so I'm not overly encouraged to spend lots of time making improvements.
However, if I get time, and encouragement, then I will finish this off.
