A genuine virus alert will come from McAfee.com or Symantec.com (Norton Antivirus), usually along with a notification of the appropriate available update for your AV software (and everyone on the forum does have AV software, right?). And they sure as hell aren't going to e-mail you the instructions on how to eliminate it. A while back there was a supposed virus alert going around with a link for instructions on how to get rid of the virus. You can guess what happened when you clicked the link - you got the virus. McAfee and Symantec don't operate that way, and those are your most likely sources for virus alerts if you have AV software (and I just know everyone on the forum has it). If you think it's too expensive, how expensive will it be to straighten out your computer after a virus chews it up?[sm23]

I received an e-mail with the following text, which I read and followed, I think I have been conned?

What will be the result of my removal of the mentioned file?  If it is really bad, could someone please send me the file back so I can replace it.

God damn it!!!

This is a copy of the text of the e-mail I received.

Sorry everyone, but someone sent me an email that

infects the address book, so I am sending you the

information on how to get rid of it.  Here's what to

do:

My address book has been infected with a virus, and as

a result, so has yours.

HOWEVER - it is very simple to remove - but you must

do it - AND notify

everyone in your address book. The virus is called

jdbgmgr.exe. It cannot be detected by Norton or McAfee

anti-virus programs. It SUPPOSEDLY sits dormant for 14

days before damaging the system. It is sent

automatically by messenger and by the address book,

whether or not you send e-mails.

To Get Rid of It:

1. Go to Start, then Find or Search.

2. In Files/Folders write the name jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure to search your "C" drive

4. Click Find or Search

5. The virus has a teddy bear logo with the name

jdbgmgr.exe - DO NOT OPEN!

6. Right click and delete it.

7. Go to the recycle bin and delete it there also.

IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT EVERY ONE IN

YOUR

ADDRESS BOOK.

Bloody Hell!  I hate the tossers who create these bloody things!
