By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Wed 25/06/03 04:57:55 GMT Website: www.styxwetworld.com These are some of the issues we are pondering, to get the best out of DivX you really need something above 1Ghz to process the data.
In addition, the current MPEG's are "white book" standard and as such can be burnt to a video CD and watched on a DVD player/TV. Would you believe some people actually project our downloaded movies onto 6 feet wide screens to view?
I believe a DivX player has been released recently, but for most people it would mean transcoding to an MPEG format to burn CD's. We're not sure how many people currently burn viewable CD's of our material. Any feedback on that would be helpful- we don't want to alientate a big chunk of members. No need to post here (if you're shy)- can always email me with any comments |

The only downside I see to Divx is that it takes a considerably higher end computer, and to jump from one section to another is not ALWAYS instantaneous. But those can easily be solved with a faster computer |

By DDMan - ddman@rcsis.com Wed 25/06/03 04:16:32 GMT As for the increase, Im on a 1 mb connection, so an extra 5 megs is about another MINUTE to download... Bring it! |

In reply to Message (4366) video formats- opinions required.
By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Wed 25/06/03 01:23:23 GMT Website: www.styxwetworld.com We are currently experimenting with DivX encoding to replace the MPEG1's on the members' site.
The reason for this is to improve quality. Despite recent claims about DivX quality, the reality is that true high quality means files of around 14Mb per minute compared to 11.5Mb for MPEG1's- a 20% increase. This would obviously increase download times.
However this should give DVD quality movies, which is somthing eveyone would like to see. This standard would also apply to free clips we would be offering to non-members'.
We would like to hear views from people who download movies to get some feed back on what they want to see.
DivX is now available for Wndows and Apple based systems and a version launched for Linux too. So we feel it could be a good time to offer DivX as it now has wide support on lots of platforms and appears to be following an open source route.
Any points, issues or opinions would be welcome.
