This is an initation ceremony for new members of the printer's guild (also called a printer's baptism). It's a rather ancient tradition, going back at least to the 16th century, although it's said to have been very different back then. Nowadays it's not limited to printers only, also other employees working within media industry are baptized that way.

I asked about it and was told that they were apprentice printers. It is some kind of a tradition dealing with the passage of an apprentice printer. And, I'm here to say "wonderful tradition!"

I've always wondered when this tradition started and where is was started and why it was started? I'm sure many of us, especially here in the U.S. would like to know.
