Wetlook-Online
I would agree that THE SILENCERS scene is certainly a classic scene that not only rates highly with wet fans, but also with messy fans too....cos this scene is more highly rated by all the MUD fans I know. So...from all the people I have chatted with over the last 20 years, I would say that this scene is a top scene for messy fans and a slightly lower rated scene from a wetlook perspective. Also, as you stated, the lighting was very dim for the entire scene....and it was only when I bought an official DVD of the film when it was re-mastered 4 years ago, that I was finally able to brighten it up a bit in my editing system., so I would rate this an 8 out of 10 (deduct 2 points for the bad lighting conditions)...but this scene rates as a 10 with most messy/mud fans.

I just thought of one movie that covers all 3 BDA wetlook factor very well....and thats the 1958 movie "Fraulein" where Dana Wynter and other saloon girls get dunked in the dunk tank in their saloon dresses in a Berlin Night Club.

http://www.thewambank.com/videos.php?id=6623&list=0

What made this scene also appealing to me was that it was based on a true life night club that actually existed in Berlin in post WW2 Germany...where the saloon girls used to get dunked in order to entertain the G.I.s...so that dunk tank night club actually existed in Berlin in the 1940's and 50's and 60's (but sadly it does not exist today).

Today, the only dunk tank night club where you can see cocktail waitresses and saloon girls dunked in the dunk tank....is a new "Carnival Night club" that just opened recently in New York City's Greenwich Village area.....if you live in the NYC area...go check it out....and send us a report...cos the folks on the Dunk Tank forum have been raving about this place recently.....here is their website...

One scene that pops to mind is in the Silencers with Stella Stevens trying to escape Dean Martin's car during a heavy rain.  Very good before during and after.   The judges could take off a couple of points for less than ideal lighting and her heels weren't shown.

What RM and Nado say is very true

BTW....it is very easy to rate the greatness of any given wetlook scene...in a totally objective (and not subjective) way. You just do what the Figure Skating judges do...i.e. you don't rate the costume (because all wetlook fans have different tastes in clothing preferences), you just rate the technical merits of any given wetlook scene...using "The BDA factor". The BDA factor  is something that all wet fans can agree upon, no matter what your clothing preferences are, and it goes like this. BDA = "Before, During and After" wetlook ...which is something that is present or absent in every scene you wish to rate. From a top score of 10 out of 10,

...allocate 3 points to the "Before factor" -- do we see the girl dry before the wetlook happens, and how is the build up and tease and anticipation for the wetlook that is coming. A scene where you never see the girl dry beforehand and never saw "how" she got wet....is called a "wet in progress scene"....where the girl(s) were already wet before you saw them (e.g.like the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" scene)...and thus a scene that is missing a "before factor" can never be a great scene, cos it can never score higher than a 7 out of 10

...allocate 4 points to the "During" factor....which is how the scene is presented and executed when the girl is in the actual wet scene....and deduct points for bad elements such as bad lighting (i.e. rain scenes that occur at night always score a zero with me). Also deduct points for bad camerawork....e.g. you only see the girls head all the time etc.

...allocate 3 points for the "After" wet factor....i.e. do you see the girl climb out of the pool....or does it just fade to a commercial break and you see no afterwet shots at all....that is called a "no aftermath scene"...and score zero if the scene fades to black or commercial break and never shows you any aftermath shots.....e.g. like the scene from "It's a Wonderful Life" etc.

So basically....if you use this simple scoring method....the ONLY scenes that can ever be considered as great hall of fame classics....are those scene that do a good job of showing you all 3 BDA elements with good camerawork and selacious editing.

I can't think of any movies right this moment that get the maximum score in all 3 areas....I am sure I can think of some later.....but I can think of a TV miniseries series scene that scores a 10, cos it nails all 3 elements perfectly...and that would be the Angie Dickinson scene from the 1982 tv miniseries "Pearl"....and even better was the 1996 Rhett Butler scene on the David Letterman show....cos there was a lot of great buildup and prelude and banter before that scene happened.

...it seems like the unwritten law on American TV is that just as things start looking good, wetlook speaking, the channel decides it is time for a commercial break! Scatter Sad

Good points.  I am a fan of wetlook but it’s very hard to think of many quality wetlook movie scenes mostly because most every scene is missing some element to complete it.  For me a quality scene should have a very nicely dressed women in a long or short dress with all the fixings that will look dramatically different when wet.  She should be shown dry, then in the water, then out of the water, and not quick shots either.  Most movie and TV scenes miss at least one of these.  Even when they complete the cycle they frequently disappoint when the first shot of a women after she has climbed out of a pool shows damp, not wet, clothes and hair.

Gee....thats a tough one....cos generally speaking, you are correct....i.e. the better wetlook scenes always tend to happen in the lousiest movies. I doubt you will ever get a concensus among the wetlook fans on what is a good wetlook scene or a good movie (I would only rate "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" as an average wetlook scene in a dull movie). But here is one way of looking at things....take the top 100 greatest films of all time, as compiled by Time Magazine, The American Film Institute and most of the top Hollywood Film Critics.....and then see how many of those films have decent wetlook scenes in them. The answer is this.....

...of the top 100 greatest films of all time, only 11 of them have wetlook scenes, and only 2 of those are pretty good scenes, and none of them are really excellent wetlook scenes. The irony is, the best film with the best wetlook scene is actually a MALE wetlook scene (Gene Kelly, in Singing in the Rain). Here are the full details

Top 100 best films of all time that have wetlook scenes

#5 = male wetlook (if you are into that)....but no doubt the best staging and best set for wetlook

#9 = a short scene only, where you do not see much

#14 = a rain scene that is too brief and too dark to see much

#18 = a very good scene, but only if you are a fan of silent films

#20 = a classic wetlook scene, but largely over-rated cos you never see anybody exit the pool

#40 = a pretty good scene with Julie Andrews in one scene, and Charmain Carr in another rain scene in the film

#41 = a brief scene with Fay Wray, but no exit shots

#61 = 2 brief scenes with Veronica Lake dumped into the pool twice, but no aftermath or exit shots, so thats not good

#65 = wet dress scenes with an ugly middle aged Katherine Hepburn, so not the best kind of wetlook

#79 = the famous vineyard scene with the mexican girls in dresses in the wine vat, but you do not see much, no exit shots either

#88 = Katherine Hepburn again, but this one is much better cos she was much better looking in the 1930's, so this one is a classic wet dress scene.

And there you have it.....nothing really great in any of the Top 100 films of all time.

If you want great wetlook scenes, then stick to B movies and moronic tv gameshows.

MK

ps....yes...I know Blade Runner has a wetlook scene that I did not mention...thats because that rain scene is so dark and so inconsequential, it is not worth considering as a wetlook scene....but the film does have an awesome sound track as well as being a great film.
