Sorry to read this. ffmpeg extraction work nice here on Ubuntu 9.04, but, to be honest, I only tested it with one .flv and one .mp4 file.

Out of sheer curiosity: if the files are still on Youtube, cant you just put the video ids here?

I guess a simple 'mplayer -dumpaudio input.mp4' does also not work on your side?

The video I have is FLV with AAC audio, which ffmpeg won't read (goes into an infinite loop of the same error message). I have another, MPEG4 with AAC audio, and ffmpeg gives me a 0-byte file.

Maybe it's a Windows thing -- doesn't matter how many codecs you install into the system, as so many programs simply refuse to have anything to do with them.

Try ffmpeg to extract the audio part:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -acodec copy output.aac

I'd like something that will de-interleave the streams held within the FLV/MP4. I don't see any use in decoding and re-encoding a video that has a perfectly good 44.1 kHz AAC audio stream -- I just want to unravel the file and deposit the AAC stream into its own file so that I can keep it. (Ditto MP3 audio streams.)
