A lot of personal care and cosmetic products, and many manufactured food products, use methylcellulose as a thickener. That includes shampoos and probably hair conditioners too. It's also used in some "personal lubricants". I think that's a pretty good endorsement for its overall safety as a messy substance to play with. I believe that methylcellulose is usually sold in powdered form. If you put the powder on your skin, I wouldn't be surprised if it did dehydrate your skin. Once it's mixed up into a slime mixture, I doubt it would cause any problem - unless it was really thick.
It's no surprise that shampoo and soap can be irritating to the skin with extended contact. It's mostly because of pH - from the cleaning ingredients.

By Roscoe_BC - Wed 22/04/09 13:32:29 GMT Doesn't methyl cellulose decompose and get smelly? Dehydrate the skin since it absorbs water? How about hair conditioner? |
In reply to Message (39854) Methylcelullose
By Captain Nemo - Wed 22/04/09 09:41:07 GMT Hello, Has anybody an idea where to buy metylcelusose in Europe? I want to do some gluey experimens with it. By the way it is very intersting experience to put on wetsuit on and under iy some slimmy substance - for ex. liquid soap or shampoo. Of course on the wetsuit you can put casual clothes and hold on normal days activity. But shampoo or soap irritates skin with longer contact so I want to use methylcelusose. Can anybody help me with celulose or know like slimmy and gooey substance? Stay wet Nemo
