It's the same with any fandom/following that society deems "abnormal" or "weird".

Sci-fi/fantasy/anime fandom always gets a bad wrap because the media always picks the worst aspects to show. (Usually, it's from conventions...they always focus on the geekiest looking of the bunch, dressed in ill-fitting costumes, brandishing all their sci-fi regalia, etc.)

So it's only natural that the media might focus on the worst aspects of this fandom/following/fetish.

Sad, yet true.
