I think that wetlook will come and go in phases.  There seemed to be a peak in intrest in wetlook in the early 70s, then it faded away, only to peak again around 1990, then it faded back.  If there is some 18-20 year cycle of things coming and going as far as fads, wetlook should peak again very soon.

I also think that we should look at another fad as an example-tattoos.  Today they seem popular, and everyone under 30 seems to have at least one tat, but back in the mid-80s when I was around 20, only deviants got tattoos.  It's possible that 10-15 years from now, the children of the tatted-up generation will come of age, rebel against their parents, and reject body art.

Speaking about the post a couple of messages back, advertisers aim to sell to the mainstream.  Right now wetlook isn't in the mainstream, so that JCPenny ad with the girl who falls into the pool didn't show her coming out of the pool, because their advisors suggested to them that it wasn't necessary to show her.  The YouTube ran 32 seconds, and JCPenny only had 30 seconds for that ad.

I'm not much into formal wear wetlook, but rather casual wear wetlook.  I only dress up in a suit and tie for formal occasions, and on those occasions, I feel that getting those clothes wet is in poor taste.  I also see wetlook as a lesiure pastime, and these fancy dresses I've seen on some female models appear to me to be a work outfit.  I'm sure that the bosses at some law firm or stock market brokerage firm wouldn't appreciate their employees showing up to work in soaking wet clothing, and that's where such an outfit should be worn.  Wetlook is for playtime, and most people outside of work would wear shorts, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes outside of work during the summertime, which is my only wetlook season.

I've noticed that lately, there seems to be fewer vids and pics of people who swim in their clothes in a creek or lake who will wear an old pair of shoes while in the water.  I think some reasons for that might be the decline in the use of glass bottles, the emergence of aqua-socks and tevas, and the fact that the price of brand-name sneakers has hit triple digits, so no one can really afford to waste hundreds of dollars on shoes they plan to ruin.  They would be better off buying generic look-alikes for 10-20 bucks.

Where would you say wetlook happens to be on the Mainstream-Fringe scale?

I would have to say that while it's not quite at the mainstream level just yet, it's getting there. I wouldn't consider it completely fringe, as there has been enough exposure of wetlook in the mainstream avenues of society (though I think it's often not as much as anyone here would like). Some of the things our talented* filmmakers, photographers and writers produce would probably be considered more towards the fringe side of society (at least from MPOV). Not that being fringe is bad - everything mainstream started out as a fringe element. When would I consider wetlook to be finally mainstream? That's an even tougher question, especially since the shift from fringe to mainstream is very gradual and difficult to measure.

I will say that here, it's considered more of an art, where in the mainstream it's more of a sidethought or circumstance, and that shift could significantly swing the stand of wetlook on the Mainstream-Fringe scale. I still haven't found that scene that looked like it was shot by Swen Goebbels, Leon Moomin, or Erik Elsas in a Hollywood blockbuster film - but then again I'm not looking hard enough either (most movies just don't interest me that much these days)...

Agree? Disagree? Think I'm a blind moron again?

*As much as I may crtiticize and second-guess what comes out, I still love ya Smokin (in a completely non-romantic manner, of course)
