Personally I like the Combined Community Codec Pack:
It ships with a load of extra codecs and filters for Windows including XviD (covers DivX) and FLV. It ships with two great players -- Media Player Classic Homecinema, and Zoom Player. MPC is a modern clone of Windows Media Player 6 (the delightful slim version before WMP went all bloated and horrid). Zoom Player is a very smooth, sleek player -- gorgeous and featured. Both players are nerdy and need some tweaking, but they're rewarding. I only discovered Zoom Player tonight when installing CCCP on my father's PC, as I've always loved MPC. With a bit of nerdy fine tuning, Zoom Player is a much easier experience. Both integrate with Real codecs, and MPC will play QuickTime videos if QuickTime is installed (not tried Zoom Player).
MPC will play all the new codecs immediately; Zoom Player and Windows Media Player won't pick them up until the system reboots. Just the intricacies.
MPC is also free as in speech -- it's Open Source software hosted at SourceForge: http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ Zoom Player is free, but their site makes it hard to find the free version (I've not managed); CCCP ships the basic free version that plays everything but DVDs. MPC is a perfectly good DVD player anyway.
(VLC is a bit polar -- you either love it, or it does nothing but crash. I've never had it do anything but crash. Never figured it out -- CCCP+MPC is more reliable ;-) |
In reply to Message (38829.1.1) ..the best free media players...
By MK - wamtec@comcast.net Tue 27/01/09 14:21:27 GMT This is a common problem when you are using an outdated version of Windows Media player that does not have all the latest codecs loaded. You can just upgrade to the latest version of Windows Media Player, but frankly we do not recommend that media player cos there are far better media players you can download for free instead.....we recommend you use the free players called GOM PLAYER or VLC PLAYER. Personally I prefer GOM Player cos it has better slider controls than VLC player.....you can try those free downloads here....they play all the file formats...

and you can get VLC player from here

Alternatively....wait 24hrs for our update script to kick in...and by tomorrow you can watch them playing on Wambank TV here
Enjoy.... MK
ps...I think the vintage 50's wetlook film shown on David Letterman show is probably something that was made by one of wetfan's friends in the 1950's.
