hi,

first: get the business basics straight.

Know the legal stuff.

Liability, registration, etc.

Tax collectors will want to know about your businesses.

Make a basic business plan:

What you'll have to spend

(If you wish to outsource anything you can't do yourselves,

you'll have to pay a pro for that. Remember)

vs.

what you may earn.

Be honest.

Is the whole business model working and worth while?

Know your competition.

Know their prices, know their quality and

know the minimal quality standards of your branch

(if you can't deliver that, you'll need to upgrade)

Learn what's and who's out there in the market.

Know what sells and what not,

what your prospective customers want,

and learn what they don't want.

second: get the technical essentials and basic equipment straight:

if you want to operate a website for profit, you MUST know how to operate it,

how to keep it very, very safe against hacking and intrusion,

set up a webshop, set up galleries, know the legal requirements, get a paypal account,

credit-card receiving account, find a reliable hosting service, and such.

Or you must have a webmaster capable of doing so for you.

Do not set up shop with amateur equipment.

Or you will be known for shoddy craftsmanship or low quality standards soon;

good and bad news will spread via the forums quickly,

and customers will avoid or pass by your site and products.

In your case, an old OM 2 (used to have one myself in ancient olde tymes)

will not do. period. You need at least a semi-pro digital camera

with an excellent lens (or interchangeable lenses).

Scanning prints or even slides directly with a slide scanner

will diminish the quality of your photos

to such low standards that you won't be able to put them on any

market – you must control every step of the post production

process, an external lab that prints your photos will extremely

reduce the quality by doing so.

You also need good lighting equipment (not inly one source / flash,

but at least two), solid tripods, reflection screens, a ladder,

and various powerful software to edit the raw photo files.

You can download such software for free, but it's not of any use if you

don't know how to operate it. There are tutorials on the web and on youtube,

however. For professional shoots, you will sometimes need a reliable assistant.

Of course you need a computer capable of running

the software smoothly, and you'll need at least two external hard drives to back-up

all your files so you don't loose your business assets when your computer breaks down.

You need access to a second (back-up) computer, too, because your customers

won't like to wait for the products the've paid for while you are

troubleshooting your equipment.

Your itsy-bitsy photo editor that came with your scanner

or with a small camera normally won't do.

Of course you will have to learn how to operate the software,

and soon you'll need a graphic tablet.

Then, you need to find and buy suitable clothing (it's obvious)

that reflects the preferences of your customers (not yours)

and make-up that is water-resistant and looks great.

third: get your skills straight:

you will have to learn a lot about the technical and legal aspects of

doing business on the internet, bookkeeping, tax, about photography

(directing models, lighting, post-production / editing, about

technology and software, selecting location and clothing, posing,

make-up etc)

You may read books, find tutorials on the web, find support websites

and groups for internet based small business, or ask a local entrepreneur

for help (Chamber of Commerce).

Your reputation depends on what you're offering and how you sell it.

You will ruin it in no time if you can't live up to the expectations

of your customers and the quality standards of your profession.

Website:

Hi Everyone. My wife and I are wanting to start up a new wet and muddy website to try and possibly earn a little extra cash. We don't want to get rich off of it, just a little extra to help us eat!! The current financial times have literally wiped us out. So we decided, " What the hey", and want to something we both love doing. We've been very modest in the past about our adventures but decided that there is nothing weird about it. We are, however conservative with our photos - no nudity. We are looking for advice on what we need to do because we are both computer illiterate for the most part. I am trying to post a few sample pix here, but can't figure that out either. Duh...    haha  So we need basic info from the ground up on what to do to get started.
