Commercial TV in the North America is funded by advertising. Advertisers don't want to risk alienating their consumers, so they are very conscious of political correctness. Lessons have been learned from past incidents of public pressure through boycotts. That shapes what appears on TV, so there's now always a line of "appropriateness". When you buy the DVD, magazine, or whatever, it comes down to what people will pay for.
That's why we see only inane sanitized game shows, reality shows, etc. on North American commercial TV. The interesting stuff only appears on cable or DVD where it's paid for directly by the viewer rather than an advertising sponsor.

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Sat 27/09/08 14:39:41 GMT It's always about what makes money, which is about what people will buy. There are two markets: the public market which has to bow to public pressure and political correctness for broadest possible appeal, and a secondary "nudge-nudge wink-wink" market - the existence of which can be denied or decried by the PC crowd, yet still allowed to exist. Within the second market, it's just what sells, and lets face it, wetlook is only a small niche.

By rudy - Fri 26/09/08 08:25:43 GMT Hi Mark,
maybe you are right, but on the other hand the Americans are the biggest producers of porn stuff worldwide. And that is politically rather incorrect. Ok, sometimes an American president needs a blowjob in the public, so America is one of the most ambivalent countries and I can speak for Germany only.
I think nobodies socks will be knocked off by a wetlook show somewhere in the world. Over the night you can watch hundreds of nude girls or girls wearing sexy dresses and stockings in public tv. But the problem is: they all are dry, because the mainstream is sex and crime and porn. And no mild wetlook scenes. So I think I can speak for many of us who have been interested in wetlook stuff for their whole lifes: thanks to Mark and Leonmoomin, EuroWAM TEAM and all the others. |

It is true that times have changed (and political correctness is a pervasive disease that has infected most of western society and is one of the major reasons why things have gotten to be so boring on tv these days).
I don't really believe that people are not interested in "selacious" or "gratuitous" tv shows any more...cos look at how moronic the "Hole in the Wall" gameshow is...and that show has been sold to over 30 countries now. Look at how popular the "Big Brother" tv shows are in Germany or the UK or Brazil....i.e. they get great ratings cos they focus so much on the shower scenes etc. Big Brother is a classic example of what is wrong with American tv....i.e. the Big Brother shows in the UK and Germany and Italy and France are choc full of selatious and sexy scenes and mild nudity...and garner huge ratings. The U.S. version of Big Brother is totally DEVOID of any sexy shots or nudity...and is totally bland and as boring as MTV's The Real World.
If the Big Brother were a hamburger....then the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Brazil....give everybody a "Big Mac" with all the trimmings.
The U.S. version of Big Brother...is like a hamburger with all the meat removed.....i.e. it is merely a boring bun with a piece of lettuce.,..ha ha
I believe that people DO want to see "mindless entertainment" (like the Hole in the Wall show)....because with all the financial problems on Wall Street and Wars and Politics and all the problems we face in everyday life....many people want to "escape" from the real world for a few hours...and just enjoy some mindless entertainment.
Trust me....if I was the head of the BBC or in charge of programming on one of the U.S. networks....it would be a piece of cake to get huge ratings by creating a mindless and gratuitous show.....designed to get the girls wet every week.

By rudy - Thu 25/09/08 14:24:00 GMT Hi Mark, this is Rudy from Germany.
I would like to write down my opinion to your contribution (why are gameshows much better in asia ??). I do not know the circumstances in other countries, but you can believe me: If there was a market for wetlook gameshows in Germany the shows would definately be produced. If only there were enough people who are interested in these things. In Germany they produce every shit you can make money with. It only depends on the tv consuments that there are no shows like 'Halli Galli', political correctness is not responsible for the lack of these shows.
Wet gameshows were normal within the 70's, but nobody is interested in that stuff. Sadly we are alone...
