Ah yes....we all know about the famous Naval Academy wet fountains graduation day events that used to take place at Annapolis, MD. On graduation day, all the girlfriends of the midshipmen would attend the event dressed up in their very best dresses and heels, and take a dip in the fountains after the hat throwining ceremonies.

Here is a pic from 1970 that depicted one of those scenes.

Sadly, by the time that I found out about this fountain day tradition at Annapolis (which was around 10 years ago) and sent a friend of mine to go check things out...the fountain at the Naval Academy was "missing" and could not be located. Doing further research we later found out that construction and renovations had taken place in the 1980's...and the old fountains and pool had been demolished and replaced by a new wing to their buildings...so that fountain no longer exists...and that tradition died.

Of course...if you live in NJ, you could always attend one of the "Fountain GIG" concerts they do 4-5 times in the water each Fall football season.

The clip was brief and I was reading your first post above when it came on, and not having had advance warning, of course could not capture it. But what I saw when I turned around looked like what I have on another clip (on my next clip tape in progress, 40 minutes into it after 2 years!). It appears that the traditional white dress uniforms that we always found so sexy are all but obsolete (I can vouch for this, just having had my shoulder fixed last week). What's popular now are loose fitting pants and top outfits, loose cut similar to scrubs, but not scrubs per se. The tops looked like regular shirts when they got wet. The clip I already have briefly shows some of them sitting on the side of the pool with their pants glistening, which I did find kind of enjoyable. My guess is that some people would find it somewhat entertaining to varying degrees, depending on exact preference. About the only place you might still find the white uniforms today is on U.S. Navy or perhaps other military nurses. Kind of sad, I thought they were sexy even when dry. I have a clipping from a 1970s edition of the Chicago Sun-Times of some graduate nurses jumping into a fountain, and they didn't appear to be wearing white, either, although they were wearing uniform dresses (the women, that is). Anyway, since I have time on my hands, I'll try to moniter this and catch the replay if I can, and put it on my next cliptape along with the one I already have. If you don't find it all that exciting, of course, you can always erase it, but at least you'll get an idea of what it is. Sometimes they replay it, sometimes they don't. If they don't replay it on the late news tonight or the early news tomorrow, they probably won't. Those events are almost always by invitation only, due to limited seating.

Yeah....we have known about that event for several years...and I sent a friend (moxie) to try and and gatecrash that event 2 years ago....but they will not let anybody from the general public attend...it is a private event for family members only. Moxie sent me some newspaper clippings of the next day photos in the local papers...and it seemed to me that the event they have today is not as good as it used to be 20 years ago. In the 1970's the nurse wore sexy nurse dresses/uniforms when jumping in the pool...but correct me if I am wrong..these days the nurses where these ugly "scrubs" style pajamas, so the scenes are not too interesting.

But I could be wrong...what did you see...proper nurse unforms...or just "scrubs".

I trust you will tape the re-run anyway...cos I cannot get Chicago stations...so it is down to you to do your bit and save it on tape. If you report that the uniforms are interesting, then I will try to get my Chicago camera guy Moxie to sneak in next year...but from what I saw...it may not be worth the effort.

...about 5 minutes ago, the local Chicago station showed the brief clip of the graduating nurses from the University of Illinois at Chicago jumping in the pool. It was maybe 10 seconds long, but it was something. So anybody in the Chicago area might want to set your VCRs for late tonight's and early tomorrow's local news broadcasts. This was shown on WLS-TV, the ABC affiliate, which is what I normally watch, but other stations might show it as well. And all that stuff MK said - right on! (pardon the corny '70s expression)

...but first. A little sermon to preach to the congregation out there...that we need more help from those of you who like to attend and tape public events. As you know, as great as Leonmoomin, Wet Brian, Erik from Paris and other video eventmeisters are...we cannot be in all places all over the globe and cover everything. We need your help and contributions too. Case in point being, while Leonmoomin, myself and Wet Brian (the good, the bad and the ugly...just kidding) were in Thailand, we also had the fountain day events taking place at same time in Albany...so I arranged for a friend (Ray) to go and cover the Albany events for us. I have now received Ray's footage and produced some vidcap galleries...which you can find from the link above. I am sure we are all glad that Ray made the effort to attend and tape this for us to see. Please remember that whenever you see stuff that Wet Brian, Erik, Leonmoomin and others post...that they went to great efforts to do those shoots and should be commended.

I am not expecting folks to support us all with financial donations...however, I would like to see more folks stepping up to the plate to help us out whenever there are events in their area or in various countries that nobody is covering. As you know, Hans from Akuna and Carl both cover the German pool party scene very nicely...but there are many other pool parties in Holland and Switzerland not being covered at all. It is not for lack of information that we are missing so many events. The data is quite well known and circulated...but few people really make the effort (as Ray just did at Albany) to attend and tape public events. A good example of that being...there were over 15 different fancy dress polar bear swims taking place in 4 different states in the USA in Feb and May...all being sponsored by the Special Olympics in various cites...and I emailed lots of contacts I had in all 3 states, and not one of those fifteen events was attended by any of the people I contacted...nobody could be bothered. Too many folks just like the comfort of their lazy boy comfy chair and just want to wait for the real heros like Leonmoomnin and company to provide you all with free pics.

Anyway...I am getting off my soap box now. See the Albany 2003 video pics...and you can thank Ray for getting you all the footage.

I hope that those of you who enjoy pics...will feel more inspired to get out there this summer and attend wet events too...cos every State has county fairs (with dunk tanks) and Renaissance Festivals (which often have a Drench the Wench booth), plus you have the famous fountains at Trafalgar in London and Trocadero in Paris....but also the overlooked Washington Square fountains in New York City too....and not having a camcorder is no excuse....cos I am offering to BUY you a camcorder if you are willing to make the effort and do something.

And now I must return to the Bat Cave where I live....
