Advantages: safe, non-toxic (it's used as a thickener in food products, liquid soaps, shampoos and cosmetics as well as in the film/tv industry for gooey/slimy things), easy cleanup (should just rinse off with water), supposedly able to produce anything from an oil-like consistency to a thick slime, can add food colour to make it more interesting. Some people have described it as having a very interesting texture. Not sure about cleanup if you add other ingredients like food colour.

Disadvantages: preparation - apparently can be tricky to get it to mix up properly... temperature and pH are apparently two factors which have to be controlled with some care to get the desired result.

Could also try cornstarch and water. Just not sure about cleanup, but shouldn't take anything more than soap and water.

As for clothes, anything goes - just bear in mind that while anything washable should be fine after a methylcellulose gunging and wash-off, you take your chances with dry-clean only and/or other gunging substances.

The best part is that she wants to try... for most folks who look for advice, their first problem is to get their significant other interested in trying.
