What's in that mud?

When the tide is out, there is mud like this in the Delaware Bay and River. The mud here is blacker and more slimey. Sometimes it's kind of stinky, especially up north near Philadelphia. I kayak in the bay but I always wait for high tide because I don't want to get any of that shit on me. My question is, am I being paranoid? Is this mud harmless or could there be toxins in there like bacteria or raw sewage? I never thought of myself as a germphobe, but I'm also grossed out by the bathing in public fountains thing. Maybe I am a germphobe.

Anyway, thoughts and comments from fellow Delaware River estuary folks will be appreciated. Thanks.
