I too have been an aficionado of wetlook commercials for a long time. Lately, I've begun
serching youtube ("Classic Commercials") and the web for archives of TV advertisements. UCLA also apparently has a television commercial archive available for public viewing at their library -- alas I don't live near UCLA.. Some notable ones which come to mind are...
1989 Cannon Camera commercial emphasizing "Zoom" feature of people photographing a woman in a pink dress falling into a fountain -- and the aftermath with her sitting on the edge of the fountain.
1960's (??) Playtex Bra commercial featuring a woman named "Monica" who gets dunked at a carnival while fully-clothed. After she gets dunked at the end of the commercial the announcer states "Playtex Bra -- holds up for 50 machine washes -- make that 51".
1960's (??) Tire commercial for the "Radial 990" -- with a woman soaked in the rain while the music "Its a sign of the times" -- with new lyrics touting the tire is played.
1960's (??) My all -time-favorite. The Sylvania "Blue-Dot" flash bulb (or cube?) commercial A woman wearing a nice dress and heels is posed horizontally on a railing. The photographer tries to take a picture of her -- only to have his flashbulb fail. The next thing you hear is a loud splash and the announcer intones -- Use Sylvania Blue-Dot flash -- because if you don't get the shot -- you can miss it forever. At the close of the commercial there is a knock on the door. The photographer opens the door and you get a head-to-toe view of the woman -- slicked down hair, sopping-wet dress and shiny soaked high-heels. She reaches down, gathers the material of her skirt and wrings out a deluge of water.
I apologize to those of you who've seen any of these summaries posted before and have had to read them again. My hope is that some "fresh face" may see these sommaries and have a flash of inspiration as to where to locate a copy of any of these. Unfortunately, many of the businesses which assemble such archives only deal with media outlets and raise other hurdles which make it difficult to pursue these wetlook gems. But perhaps someone here may have access to the UCLA collection or some other source that I have not turned up in my researches thus far. Therefore your mission -- should you decide to accept it is to rescue these wetlook gems of the advertising world from the sands of time -- Good Luck Mr. Phelps :-).
