What's this got to do with how well run the WetInRed site is? The only issue with the site itself is DreamHost whose retarded approach to measuring user RAM usage has broken the download counter. (They don't understand the concept that program code is only ever loaded into RAM once no matter how many programs -- such as instances of php5.cgi -- are using it, so each download being run through php5.cgi counts as 18 MB towards my memory usage, since that's the size of php5.cgi, Zend, all sorts of libraries including C++ runtime itself, and finally my own code, heap and stack, despite most of that being in RAM anyway)
As far as I know, there's little wrong with the site itself. Some of the admin facilities are a bit rough, but that's my lookout obviously. Search is mostly fixed, which was the main public-facing flaw that plagued me.
However, I don't see any reason why I should be expected to know how to run any site as a business -- that's not why I ever got involved. I only got involved in it to replace the static FrontPage site with an automated back end. I never many any pretenses about knowing how to edit video, of having a fast PC with a TV card, of even WATCHING much TV (I don't). I was hoping Tom the Austrian would take over running it, at MK's suggestion, but I guess that's not what Tom wishes right now.
I would be perfectly happy if anyone else took over the business side, the content side, any of it. As long as the person running it is clued up on what makes a site like this one tick.
I'm long accustomed to the idea of a site that generates next to no feedback, as I've had that delightful experience ever since 2000, with my personal site. But what keeps me going, year after year (notwithstanding the long periods of stagnation) is that I create my own content for it. I draw the pictures, write the software, build all the pages and that is what I enjoy, and the hope that people may enjoy it.
The WetInRed site is a site of trudgery without reward, and it's no fun. In your case, you get to meet the models, shoot all the sets and jet off around the world to accomplish this. In effect, your site is more like my personal site -- a site where content is created and you can revel on the creation too. (Plus it brings in regular money, so you get a good feel for who appreciates it.)
As "Webmaster" my role was, and remains, the Web developer of WetInRed, but I hope I never made any pretenses to the effect that I'm the right man for the job, that I have any marketing or business sense, or have the faintest clue how to run a pay site.
What that has got to do with trying to discuss topics on a forum goodness only knows. |

As a webMASTER, you are supposed to be competent of managing a website!
Also, as the site you run is made up of contributions from others, it is fairly important to be popular with people!
You blame this forum for your problems with running the site that you are supposed to be manageing??? Bizzare!!! Most wetlook sites post to this forum, yet the management of their websites do not get effected by it??? I don't think any other website that posts here has EVER blamed the mismanagement of their sites on this forum, that has to be a first!!!
Nigel, can you please alter the way this forum works, so that Telcontar can manage the WIR site better, haha!

On a branching, threaded forum such as this -- and one with a topic response timeout of a week or so -- trying to respond to posts effectively is quite difficult. In order to respond to everyone, I'd have to break the hierarchy and respond on the wrong branches, or (as I do tend to do) flood out the topic by replying individually, which I feel bad about as it looks like I'm talking the topic to death. I also hate replying too soon, as it gives the impression that I've wrapped it up already.
I prefer to respond once everyone's spoken, but then, when is that? And after a while, the topic disappears and is locked out. It's a strange system to work with. It's hard to find a balance between waiting (especially now I've set it to hide abandoned topics to reduce page load time) and pre-emptively replying to everything before people are finished.
I don't like compromise in solutions, or imperfect solutions -- there's always something perfect that I'm waiting for, if I can only discover what that is -- something that "clicks" and I know it's what I was waiting for.
But often times, I need a consensus. If people offer differing opinions (such as what to do with Steve's site), I don't know who to believe. I can't please everyone, but I can at least please a majority of people if there's any notion of majority presented. Otherwise, I just have no idea who to believe, and who I'd piss off if I followed each person's advice, or who I'd discourage from joining.
I've wondered if I need to create a poll ... it's certainly one approach. The down side to polls is that they stifle creativity as, after all, they limit people's responses to my preconceived set of options.
But it's not just me who supposedly ignores suggestions. For all the suggestions that other people do post, no-one else responds to them. That alone is valuable -- I'd rather let everyone debate amongst themselves until some sort of consensus is reached. That is what doesn't happen -- everyone appears to expect me to choose whichever I feel -- somehow -- is the answer. |

It would be very hard for anyone to voice an opinion to you Telcontar!
Any opinion that I have ever seen anyone offer you has never been good enough, and in such cases, all cases, you have never shown any thanks for their efforts, only dismissed every suggestion offered! Your opinions are always better than anyone else's, or, perhaps someone will offer you an opinion you have already thought of, due to the way you behave towards people who do this, people who may have a good idea will be reluctant to share it with you!
My suggestion, if you can't figure out a solution yourself and everyone else does not feel able to offer you any advice, shut the site down! I'm sure that Steve did not think he would go so quickly and suddenly, he made a promise that someone else would have to keep and unfortunatly had not managed to find the right man for the job before his unfortunate passing!
I would have some suggestions for you, but, you have demonstrated to me that you are not someone I would wish to offer any assistance to, sorry!
If you really want to be a martyre, go kill yourself!!!

It will last as long as people make it worth my while. If I were to take MK's suggestion that 40 clips a month is insane, and that I should stick to 6-10, that would extend the life -- for the existing unseen clips -- to nearly four more years. It would also mean a need to only source that many new ones each month to keep the site going indefinitely.
The problem is that I'm the last person on earth to run a pay site, but ended up with it. I have no idea how much to charge, how many clips to post each month (Steve lapsed the 40/month after I rebuilt the site but I decided to honour his original promise), I've never had anything to do with digital video in my life, and although I've tried to solicit opinions from everyone, all that I ended up with was more contradictory views and nothing close to a consensus. I'm lost, I haven't a clue what people need, desire or expect and I need answers. I need as close to a consensus as possible. |

I'd like a larger selection of clips from which to select the members update, but WetGod has those. And I don't feel justified to nag him over these while they're still waiting for me to get the InterWet site going.
I'm still battling DreamHost -- their recent memory usage management mechanism is breaking the site, but they've implemented it very naively and I'm being very unjustly affected. I'm still trying to teach them how Linux (or any modern OS) works and there's but the smallest sliver of hope that they might reprogram their system. I'm overdue a reply so maybe they're investigating. (This is the problem that was causing so many Freebie downloads to fail) If they refuse, or are simply too incompetent to do anything about it, I need to remove the download counter and alter the site to use direct download links. But as a matter of principle, I'm fighting this one.
More importantly, any endeavour in life should be either financially, emotionally or personally rewarding. The WetInRed site is none of these. It's no benefit to me personally, it has no emotional benefits and it's not justifying this by bringing in money.
With a virtual lack of contributors, the lifetime membership had to go for new members. So what do we replace it with? What price? And how long should memberships be? MK suggests we drop to a more sensible 6-10 clips a month, but is this what people want? (It would extend the site's life out to four times the present estimate)
I've tried and I've tried to get an answer out of people on BOTH forums, but the response was absolutely dismal. Very, very few people were willing to help out in that discussion, and it appears that there'd be little more than one new member anyway, as exactly one person expressed an interest in joining. No-one else seemed to want to join.
Right now, I've really lost my appreciation for the site. There's the WAMbank anyway, which now has free downloads for clips under 1 minute. It's hard to compete, and I wonder if it's worth it trying to. Maybe I'd feel more inclined to work on the site if it was more rewarding in ANY way. Right now, it's just a sink of time and effort for too many faceless people who say nothing, won't help and just suck up bandwidth. There is no fun in that. |
