Ah I see, interesting. You have the various vowels with in-built 'y's (e.g. ye, yo (also written 'e' ;-) ) but the letter i, in Russian, is really "yi" even though it's not called that.
"lyitvyinyenko" must be somewhere at the top of the list of unpronounceable names :) |

By Anonymous - Tue 13/03/07 07:27:31 GMT In Russian every consonant is softened before vocals "e" and "i". So Litvinenko is in reality something like "lyitvyinyenko".
In Sout Slavic languages it is different. In Serbian and Bulgarian there is no such softeness as in Russian.

By Telcontar - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Tue 13/03/07 03:07:01 GMT Oh right, yes, I noticed you'd written it in Cyrillic on one of the pages.
Cyrillic transcription is fun. I remember when Alexander Litvinenko died, and news anchors would refer to him as "lit-vi-nen-koh", because the "ny" sound is never transcribed correctly into English. (I am guessing it's created by that little diacritic over the 'e' and that's why it gets dropped? But then, we transcribe "nyet" the way it's pronounced, instead of "net" which is how it's really spelt). |

By sara - Mon 12/03/07 17:45:34 GMT Yes, in some places it is sara, in other places sarah. In reality 90 % of the postings are not by me, but by my husband. |

By Telcontar - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Mon 12/03/07 16:46:38 GMT You remind me a lot of another Sarah I know, particularly that last photo, which is so lovely.
(You're Sara, but on the Styx forum your username is "sarah" -- Sara H, I am guessing, not Sarah. Sarah itself is one of my favourite names, quite possibly because of the Sarah I know ;) |
