The west of the Netherlands is lower than the sea. We call that land a polder. Between the polders are a lot of small waterarias, to make the windmills easier to pomp that water to higher levels, and at last the sea. When you had to cross such a waterarea there are a few options. With a long peace of small wood and jump over the water (the north of holland. they call that fierljeppen, and it is a very populair sport in the North) Or to make a small bridge with a pole or a log, the west of holland. In the early days this was the only way to came across. Now there a several good bridges everywhere, and we walk across to have fun, and you must have smoething to do in your free weekend. |

By Frank (the noname) - Thu 18/01/07 13:02:28 GMT tradition seems to have its roots in old seafaring, namely piracy (urgh!). Victims had to balance for their life. I'm not this good in Dutch, maybe someone else can translate the "historie" from the page |

By retardo - Wed 17/01/07 19:57:06 GMT Does anyone know about this tradition? It is some kind of Netherlands thing where people have to walk a pole across a river... or at least try. I have started to search the net a bit, but since I don't speak dutch I am finding it kinda hard. It seems like it has some potential.
Here is a site with a few photos... mostly dry, or 'before'.
