NTL have introduced a 1GB download restriction, it's caused a lot of uproar in the UK.
NTL can't really apply that limit to the upstream side, because the speed is so slow it's almost impossible to reach 1GB in one day, let alone exceed it- well it is in my area!
The average I get is around 70-80 kbps- lets say 10 kbytes per second. That gives a realistic limit of around 850 Mbytes per day. Sometimes I have found it can drop to half that for some periods of the day. A proper ADSL connection gives at least twice the speed of NTL's upstream, often 3 times.
Anyone thinking of going on to broadband in the UK- think twice before signing up with NTL. I'm waiting for my contract to run out so I can switch to another provider! |

By Walt - Thu 06/03/03 10:42:08 GMT I've heard of Broadband providers pulling the plug on excessive BW usage. Hopefully this won't happen to them!
Some DSL providers have limits on BW as part of the TOU. |

By Graham (UK) - graham@styxwetworld.com Thu 06/03/03 06:35:33 GMT I already offered Grayhost hosting of 40Gb monthly bandwidth and 2Gb storage space, but I think they're enjoying the challenge of trying to run a server. They were not interested in professional hosting. The problem is that running a server from home and trying to service all the video and photo requests on a DSL connection is not going to work unless people want to wait ages for downloads. Ho Hum! |

By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Thu 06/03/03 05:01:41 GMT Hi Kat and Mint, it seems you are putting yourself through it a bit with the server.
May I make a suggestion, there's a UK company oneandone, who would host your site. They offer 40Gb of bandwidth per month within their package, which works out at 1.3Gb per day.
They also have T3 connections so everything would speed up massively.
The draw back is they only offer 600Mb of space, but if you rotated your content you could get around that, maybe even open a second site as an archive.
Just a thought- might find life a lot easier : )
By the way, it only costs a fiver a week |
