I can't use RapidShare, period. My ISP's Web proxy gets in the way and RapidShare make no effort to workaround such issues, they just block me.

I just notice that people are asking over and over what RAR files are. You're not the only person lately to want to use RAR, but RAR files are typically used by software pirates, and not by anyone else. I used them way back in my DOS days as they were marginally more efficient than Zip files, but not a whole lot. For best compression, use BZip, but that's another relatively obscure format. GZip is less obscure and still superior to zip, but zip is still the universal format. Mac OS X natively supports UNIX compression like GZip and BZip, but I don't know about Mac OS 9's free versions of StuffIt. Windows folk, can uncompress whatever the most popular archiver will handle. What this is, I have no idea ... WinZip maybe? Win XP does zip natively now, but many people still have 2000, Me, 98 or even 95! I use StuffIt Expander for Windows, and that does in fact do RAR. I have a feeling 7-Zip for Windows, a free compression tool, also decompresses RAR. Neither will compress RAR, as you will have to pay for that, but free RAR decompression in other apps is permitted by RARLabs.

But of course, for grouping files together, use zip. Try to use zip with no compression, to save on time at both ends. (I prefer tar for that task, but I can't assume that most Windows folk have the means to untar, whereas Mac OS X and *NIX folk all can and OS X will probably give you a nice zip icon to show you what the file is. OK, tar is not compressed -- and that's the whole point! -- but Mac OS likes to keep things simple ;)

Actually RAR files are becoming even more popular than Zip, but I can certainly change my compression to ZIP from RAR. I agree with you on the compression of videos and am not using it for video. It just makes images more convenient! Hope you're all enjoying the posts.

OK, let's be certain ... you downloaded the RAR file and tried to open it in a player like Windows Media Player/QuickTime Player?

RAR files are a type of archive format, used to group files together and provide compression. The official, shareware software is at RARLabs: http://www.rarlab.com/

There may be a free alternative but I don't know, I use StuffIt Expander in Windows for RAR and that's also shareware.

*** To DjDave: Can you PLEASE STOP using RAR files? Not only do many people not understand them, but they are POINTLESS when it comes to compressing existing lossy-compressed media like photos and videos. Do not compress video files, it's senseless; you cannot compress an already compressed file such as JPEG images, MP3 audio, and common video codecs (the ones typically used by AVI, WMV, mov etc). Please go read up on lossy compression. Compressing video as RAR is a needless headache for everyone.

If you want an archive format to wrap images up into a single file, use zip: it's supported on Mac OS, Windows XP and above and most *NIX platforms, and most people whose platforms don't support it natively (e.g. Windows 2000 and earlier) still know what the heck zip files are, and there are free programs to decode zip files, e.g. 7-zip. RAR files are very rare in the wild.
