FYI...this is more or less an obligatory cliche in period films....cos you see the same scene in numerous films depicting that era...i.e. you have exactly the same scenes with Marisa Berenson in the 1975 movie "Barry Lyndon" and the same scenes again with Annette Bening in the 1989 film "Valmont" too.
Bathing in shifts was common in those days. All my family and I used to bathe in shifts when we were growing up....i.e.I had 5 brothers and we only had 1 bathroom.
