Canon is nice and all, but as he already owns some lenses from his F5 he should stay with Nikon. And: concerning image quality (esp. noise), speed etc., the D50 is (like all digital SLRs) *far* superior to small consumer models like the Powershot series.

@aquanylons: If you own some decent lenses, the D50 will be by far the best value for your money. The missing DOF preview should not be much of a problem - the viewfinders of SLRs in this class are so small that you can't really see much difference anyway. If you need a bright, clear viewfinder with really good DOF preview capabilities, you should go for the D200 (which unfortunately is much more expensive).

...shop around.  You can find a better price than what's on the link I provided.  The link is just so you can learn about the camera.

The Nikon D50 is a great camera for the money.  It's not the very top of the line, but you'll get high quality pics without dropping $1K or more.  Here's a link: http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25216

If you don't mind sharing info, just wondering about the equipment wetlook producers use to for shooting stills and video. Thinking of jumping into a digital camera (from my old Nikon F3) and hopefully start shooting some material again this coming spring/summer after years of not shooting. Can't afford a real expesive camera at this time, but something decent to take decent pics.

Thanks for any and all info.
