People in Asia generally have a different expectation of "public modesty" than people in the West. They also don't have the concept of "getting a tan", so exposing as much skin as possible to the sun isn't a characteristic of their lesuire pursuits. As people learn more about how harmful direct sunlight can be and skin cancer., it's to be hoped that "sun worshiping" will decline here too, and people will take to wearing more long-leg and long-sleeve bodysuits, or indeed ordinary sports clothes, for swimming.
Regarding the "shorts as streetwear" thing - it's perfectly normal in the UK for people to wear shorts or tracksuits with logos, stripes, etc, as normal streetwear, tracksuits have been the standard street clothing for the lower socio-ecconomic groups for at least fifteen years here, there are many chains of shops that sell nothing but "sportswear", most of which is never used for sport. The style is commonly associated with the rough "Chav" culture, but on social housing estates it tends to be pretty universal. It's cheap, reasonably durable, and regarded as "stylish" by some, encouraged by sporting celebrities. |

By Desert Hawk - Fri 22/09/06 04:08:03 GMT These pictures are from a Christian camp. In the camp pool, there are no bikinis or one-piece swimsuits in sight. All the women are swimming in shorts and t-shirts. Even many of the men have t-shirts on. Most of the shorts are swim trunks (which, as you know if you have followed my messages, I consider to be just another style of shorts), but a few are "street clothes".

now for the best pictures from the album: http://www.flickr.com/photos/89177631@N00/230726732/in/set-72157594262963505/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/89177631@N00/230724165/in/set-72157594262963505/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/89177631@N00/230726730/in/set-72157594262963505/
This group seems to be college age approx 18-20. The camp seems to be somewhere in Asia, but strangely, English appears to be the language spoken. Could this be Singapore, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, or are there lots of areas in Asia where English use is common? These pictures clearly show that it is possible to have fun in the water without exposing nakedness via bikinis for women and bare chests for men. This seems to be the norm in Asia, why not in America? Why don't more churches adopt policies like this for church-sponsored swimming parties. Instead, the trend in America is for churches, including my own, to ban all "mixed swimming" because, as my pastor puts it, "mixed swimming is the same as mixed nudity". This statement is correct when referring to regular American ideas of swimwear. A much better solution would be to do as this group has done: announce that bikinis and one-piece swimsuitsare prohibited; everyone must wear shorts and shirts.

The woman on the left is wearing swim trunks as regular clothes. These shorts are obviously swim trunks, because "street clothes" shorts don't have logos on the lower leg, as these do, and the stripes on the side are another indicator. I included this picture as further evidence of my position that swim trunbks are indeed a form of regular clothes, and therefore wet swim trunks with shirts are entirely on-topic here.
One more thing, I was very lucky to have found this at all. My search term was "Tidal Wave", as in the ride. It just so happens that of the male pictures used that phrase in the description. There must be lots more pictures like these out there that I will never find. People like these consider swimming in clothes to be perfectly normal, so they will not highlight this in descriptions, so searches for "swim clothes", "pool clothes", etc will not find them. I don't have time to search "swim", "pool", etc. and then weed through hundreds of bikini pictures looking for a few elusive pictures we are interested in, especially since I am stuck with dialup!
