"Bot" is short for "robot". In terms of IRC (Internet Relay Chat, a popular Internet chat room system) a bot is a computer program that sits in the chat room with the other people. Bots tend to be used to automate various tasks like assigning operator (moderator) rights to users, recalling data, running quizzes and kicking out bad people.
