OK, just installed the latest version in Windows 2000. Launched it ... Tried playing JHtvbreizh.avi and it does nothing. No playback, the play readout remains stuck at 0:00:00. If I click stop, it briefly switches window size to accomodate the video frame then returns to the video-frame-less view. gimmeanf.mpg fails to even register a duration at all, and is stuck at 0:00:00 of 0:00:00.
I love the UI of Windows Media Player 6, I hate every version made since. Media Player Classic is a modern player designed to visually emulate WMP 6 but with more features. WMP 6 itself is not bad, and my copy of MPC no longer plays WMV files, so I use WMP 6 for those and WMP 6 is able to download and use the latest Microsoft codecs (I rarely say this, but, GO MICROSOFT! Apple won't let me use newer codecs with the iTunes-free QuickTime 6).
Generally, MPC works fine, a few clips come out with bad aspect though, not sure what is up with that. I like how I can maximise the window without enlarging the video frame, gives me a nice cinema-like black background to ease what my eyes see so I can focus on the clip.
VLC seems to be a dud, though ... pity, you're not the first person to mention it. |

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Tue 05/09/06 09:15:49 GMT there is a simple solution....just use the VLC player which is a free download from http://www.videolan.org/
Unlike media player and divx player....the vlc player can play almost all the formats......it's free....check it out.

I find the evidence rather suggests your computer is shagged. Very much so. The odds of six MPEG clips and three AVI clips (I am assuming these are DivX AVI), from different sources, ALL being broken, is very slim.
Yes, two of the MPEG clips don't play in Windows Media Player 6 in Windows 2000, I find that really odd. They play in Media Player Classic, and they contain MPEG 2 video data, so they may just be incorrectly encoded somewhere. JHtvbreizh.avi however plays just fine in old Windows Media Player 6.
And since other people can play them too, you need your computer looking at. What OS is this, and what player software? For the AVI clips, try both the official DivX player (if your platform has one) as well as the native player (WMP in Windows, QuickTime Player in Mac OS). Go back and play older clips of the same file extensions, make sure those all work. |
