I can shed some light on this, being religious and jewish, and having some familiarity with Israel having spent a year there.
Bostonwet is mostly correct in what he says.
Israel is a country of beautiful scenery from the desert in the south, to the forests of the North. There are a lot of opportunities for hiking all over the country. Many of these pictures would have been taken in Ein Gedi, but many would also have been taking in the streams and valleys of the Golan Heights, in the North East of the country. Some could also have been taken in the Jordan valley and around the Sea of Galillee.
It is very common for jewish teenagers from around the world to visit Israel during the summer months in organised groups, to learn about the country, and the religion. Most of these trips would include a few hikes to explore and experience the country. Quite apart from this, the Israeli schools also take their kids on trips around the country, for the same reason.
Israeli's, whether Jewish, Muslim or Christian are by and large very proud of their country. Many non Israeli Jews are also proud of Israel, and in my opinion, part of the reason, is because when people explore the country in this way, what they get is so very experiental.
Most of the religious jews will have seperate schooling for boys and girls, and this also applies to many of the religious institutions that people from elsewhere come to study at. So enjoy these photo's guys - they're as close as most of you are gonna get to a soaking wet religious jewish girl! Of course, you could always be lucky enough to visit one of these venues at the same time as an all-girl religious group - they are all public venues.
As to the attire, well, were it that the venues were private and no men could get a view, the girls would all be in swimsuits. As it is, Judaism does mandate modesty in clothing and behaviour. This aspect of the religion has taken on a very fervant aspect amongst some, in modern times. I don't know how the rabbi's would respond if they knew that their attempts to reinforce this modesty was inadvertantly being counter constructive for some!

By Bostonwet - Tue 29/08/06 06:58:19 GMT ..............Some of these pics were taken at the waterfall at Ein Geddi (spelling?) near the Dead Sea, some at the Jordan River, some at Med. Sea beaches, some at the Dead Sea, and some at places unfamiliar to me. I have only been to Israel in the winter, not much swimming except at the Dead Sea. These pics seem to be taken at outings & trips (note armed security guards in some pics) of Orthodox girls & women; boys & men would never accompany them on these trips. I would guess that many of these pics are of non-Israelis, probably Americans visiting Israel. Orthodox women are required by religious law to keep covered to below the knee at all times, hence the long skirts. Perhaps Jewish Wet can fill us in on some of these other venues.......Shalom. |
