We use Frontpage to make the main pages (or I use brute-force html) and I use either Web Page Generator (which I can't find on the 'net anymore) or more recently, Extreme Thumbnail Generator (which will cost me if I want to keep using it). I like it because we can save custom layout templates with images as backgrounds. We can also include the Google Ads html in the tamplate so it's automatically there each time we generate image pages. This stuff isn't trivial though so if you don't know anything about web pages, you'd need somebody who does unless you want to use Webshots or some other free picture hosting site. |
In reply to Message (24432.2.1.1) About running a site...
By Telcontar - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Sun 27/08/06 16:32:58 GMT Well, there are various approaches really.
You could use a site like Flickr/Webshots/Photobucket/Image Shack to host the images. Webshots has the most appropriate design, Flickr is a bit weird (it's a weird non-hierarchical system) but it will do the job. The advantage of these is that you can leech free hosting off them, but I personally would feel a bad using them to host something this traffic-heavy unless I was paying for the account. It's just not fair otherwise, really. (To me; others may disagree, but Todd and Jennifer now have their own domain and, albeit through donations, pay for their own Web traffic for all their new sets, although the older ones all remain at Webshots).
If you wanted to run your own site, e.g. marjorie.fr, you don't truly need a webmaster (or webmistress!) as you could make do with slapping together a couple of pages in Microsoft FrontPage and then using a Web image gallery maker to take care of the rest.
Yes, I'm a Web Nazi, yes, I piss on the FrontPage and IE developers, but sometimes in cases like this, it really does just get the job done! (Which I hate :P) Liquid Ladies is (mostly) the work of FrontPage and a Web image gallery maker; the image galleries do have some CSS of mine to (I will put this nicely) match the output with the rest of the site. Can't convince WIR to get a decent gallery maker :-P So I patched up the output of the one he's using. I don't think FrontPage does enough to encourage the power and flexibility of a CSS-based site design. Feel free to pester me if you ever need any CSS advice.
Whatever Todd and Jennifer use seems to do the job nicely though. I can't recommend one as the one I have is on my Macintosh. Unless you use a Mac too?
But the down side of running a domain is the hosting charges. You have to multiply the image sizes, say 150 k each, by the number of expected image views per month. For about $40 a year I get 20 GB allowance with my site, probably not the best deal, I imagine Dreamhost do better. 20 GB / 150 k = 13,333 image views per month. If we assume one new set per month, and 3000 people view that set, that's 13,333 / 3000 = 44 new images per month.
Quite harsh, eh? You'd have to think about the maths, compare hosting plans etc. Writing a bit of HTML is easy, the hard part is dealing with all the hits that rain in! That's what people use Flickr and Webshots for. Depends how you feel on that. |

By Marjorie - marjorie-alan@wanadoo.fr Sat 26/08/06 13:41:53 GMT Thank you Don; yes your info was helpfull. Surprising that I got it from you and not from Leonmoomin himself... I think running a business gives some responsabilities towards the clienthood... I'dd love to reopen a site but I have no webmaster. Do you have any suggestion?... |

By Don - Sat 26/08/06 11:19:36 GMT Website: http://mostwam.com/ Marjorie, I too loved your site and all your work. I was very lucky to catch your work early and have saved many pictures. Thank you so much. You are a doll!!!
Have you tried to go to the following: http://mostwam.com/ It looks like it is the new location for street splash.
Would you consider reopening your site if the info I gave you is helpful? |
In reply to Message (24432) about leonmoomin's sites
By Marjorie - marjorie-alan@wanadoo.fr Sat 26/08/06 10:20:38 GMT I am a girl who loves getting wet fully clothed and loves wathing other girls doing so. Some might remember the free site Marjoriewet I had about a year ago... Anyway, I signed up different sites including Leonmmomin's wet and muddy ones. I recently signed up Streetsplash for six month but after about a week the site vanished. I have sent five emails to Leonmoomin's different mailboxes, including through Minx forum answering to his encouragement to contact him in case of any problem with Streetsplash, but he never cared to answer. Feels like I am only good at paying, getting nothing un return and shutting up !! Anybody feel the same? To my conclusion Leonmoomin turned to be a crook
