Dear Stormy, I am a big fan. I however did not send you any money via paypal. This was for a couple of reasons: I did not relise that the amount was optional - I intended to send $50 or nothing. With such a big donation, when compared to other site membership fees I wanted to see how many undates there were over the first week, (also my wife was off work that time and spending loads of time on the PC isn't good !!!!) - anyway, you only updated once during that period. You did explain when you came back that you had been doing some photoshoots, but nevertheless, I held off paying, and again waited to see if you updated the site. You did give us some excellent photos, but I still felt 263photos for $50 was not really value for money. I understand that you required members to donate to actually get the photos on, but I reckoned at $50 for 10 photos, they would only be posted at irregular intervals, whereas for that amount of cash, I really need a few thousand photos straight off i.e. Leonmoomin, MK sites. I am sure that many of us who did sign up, wanted to subscribe through PayPal, but there must be many like me, who were waiting to see what happened, because if no-one donated then no photos would would be posted and we would get poor value for money. If you had only issued the membership after getting the donation, then things, I'm sure would have been different. I am very sorry that the scheme didn't work out, as I love your work. Once again, I would ask you to generate photos CDs and make them available to all of us , and ask a realistic price that reflects your hard work, but still lets us enjoy your photos. You would get your donations up front, and we would know exactly what was on order. With CD burning being so easy these days, could this be an option?? I know of other sites that sell photo CDs for about $25 per thousand images. This sounds like a lot, but once you have burnt that all important first CD, then making further copies is straight forward, and CDs are very cheap. Obviously postage would be an extra cost above the $25. Please reconsider!!! Your work is fantastic, and we do all want to see it - if you cannot make a pay site then this could be the easy option. It seems such a shame that you are paying out so much money and spending so much time on these shoots and your real fans are not getting to see the results.
Thank you for what has already been made available - I'm sorry that Flickr didn't work out. Magician. |

By Stormy Waters - Tue 15/08/06 18:52:13 GMT A few weeks ago I announced an experiment for distributing my library of about 50,000 wetlook photos. On some level, that experiment was a success. I've had 400 members sign up to see my Flickr group, and there have been 50,000 views of that portfolio. For every view, it has cost members less than half a penny. Many of you have joined and been very complimentary in your comments. For that I thank you. It is very gratifying to do something that you truly enjoy and receive so many accolades for doing it.
Seventeen members (or about 4%) have donated to support the group, with an average donation of $14 each. I have added many more photos than promised based on the donations, so I hope all feel I have lived up to my end of the bargain. For those who have donated $20 or more, I feel some sense of obligation to give you access to more photos than posted to the group. Had others supported the group the way you did, you all would have had hundreds, or thousands more pictures to view. If you will email me at bigwave1989@yahoo.com with identification that allows me to verify your contribution, I will send you a full CD with approximately 350 of my favorite shots as thanks for your support.
But, with less than $250 donated, it just isn't worth the time of maintaining the group, and the donations do not defray even the cost of one photo shoot. Several professional wetlook producers had predicted this outcome, and frankly, I expected it, but I felt it important to try it anyway. And it was fun. But I must now kill the group.
I'll take an extended break from producing and posting my work--possibly permanently. It's remarkably time consuming and expensive. It will be fun to sit back and watch a new crop of producers emerge and marvel at those "old timers" who continue to provide us with great material year after year.
Regard to all,
Stormy Waters
