| yes this was a most highly successful campaign in retrospect and an interesting study. I feel the tobacco industry fully exploited women much to their own delight at that time. And the references to a time past, when women were not allowed to wear bathing suits to the beach, and swam with the clothes on. No wonder, it's freakin hot on the beach and the water so tempting, and beside the point. This was a humorous, sarcastic approach to the rebellion of women against the conventions of a once patriachal society. Rebellion still the key, and the question, had she really come a long way? After all, rebellion has led to a fistful of consequences, lung cancer and other proven smoking related dieases, skin cancer from over exposure of the skin to the sun wearing the bikini, a tan line becoming as fashionable as smoking. Ironic that these things were (still are) considered as cool, basically to adopt the same bad habits as the men and then drop dead, smart! Maybe the men should adopt the ways (imposed) upon the woman in times past? Don't smoke, and go to the beach with their clothes on for full protection from the sun.. and to be sure all are within equal boundaries, she follows suit. pun intended haha! |

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way... Years ago I ran accross some Virginia Slims ads in TV Guide. I was lucky enough to find an online archive of tobacco ads that contained the very ads I recalled from the late 1970's / early 1980's.
The ads were part of the Virginia Slims advertising campagn with the theme of "You've come a long way baby... to get where you got to today". Each ad featured a short illustrated vignette describing how women were punished back in "the bad old days" for the unfemenine behaivior of smoking cigarettes.
