Thanks for the info....I can offer a little more insight into this.....cos I have in my possession (thanks to a collector who spent 25 years hunting for this) a copy of one of those actual "You've come a long way baby" Virginia Slims tv commercials...from 1968.

Sadly the website you visited has done an extremely poor job of scanning those ads....it is hard to see any detail, cos their scans are so poorly done. But those are just magazine ads...I have one of the original tv commercials that Virginia Slims made for that ad campaign.

Sadly...I only have one of the "pie" related tv commercials....but it's a classic...cos it features 6 of the top models of that era being pied, plus actress Rita Moreno being pied too. The ad also stars David Doyle (before he became "Bosley" on Charlies Angels).

Your posting raises an interesting question though....cos until today I always thought that this ad campaign and tv commercial only feaatured women being pie'd....I did not know they also did print ads featuring women also being dunked and doused too.....so that begs the question....if there was a tv commercial based on the pie scenes....might there also be a long lost tv commercial featuring models being dunked and doused too.....sheez...and it took us 25 years to fnd a copy of this commercial...and now we may have to start huntig all over again.

The tv commercial itself was never repeated....because it was politically incorrect in at least 3 ways....firstly David Doyle is vey demeaning to the girls...and talking like a real male chauvenist pig...and secondly he is abusing all these models by hitting them with pies and humiliating them...and thirdly this commercial is all about promoting feminism thru SMOKING...how illogical is that...no wonder they pulled this ad campaign so quickly.

Virginia Slims brand of cigarettes -- content may be offensive to anti-smokers...

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way... Years ago I ran accross some Virginia

Slims ads in TV Guide. I was lucky enough to find an online archive of tobacco ads

that contained the very ads I recalled from the late 1970's / early 1980's.

The ads were part of the Virginia Slims advertising campagn with the theme

of "You've come a long way baby... to get where you got to today". Each ad

featured a short illustrated vignette describing how women were punished back in

"the bad old days" for the unfemenine behaivior of smoking cigarettes.

Submitted for your approval please find links to selected ads from the Virginia

Slims campaign... Maybe our colleagues at the Vintage Wetlook site might consider

incorporating these pictures.
