Hmmm

Back-ups, PC 1 had the back-ups for PC 2!  PC 1's C drive was failing (clicking noises and random crashes) so tried to remove two of its hard drives and put into PC 2!  This process caused a system failure on PC 2, which resulted in me doing everything possible to restore the operating system.  Phoning and phoning the manufacturers 24 hour helpline!  So i treid to restore PCs 1 and 2 using the restore disks that came with the PCs!  As PC 1, was a back up of PC 2, It did not seem so important that a new version of windows was installed and old files lost!  PC 2, I tried to boot from the restore CD, when I did this no warning was given that it would lead to a loss of all data on drive C!  Drive C being one of the three 300gb sata drives in it!

So the system went of and deleted the content and formatted the disk of PC 2, without warning me that this was what it was doing, unlike PC 1, which warned me that it was doing it!

Now when we talk of back-up, We have shot about 120 (Mud and Gunge) updates for mostwam (shot from the end of April to now!), all of which had hundreds of pictures, this is what i have lost!  I have been assured that the data, can probably be recovered, but obviously this is a major catastrophy even so!  I have isolated drive C of PC 2 and am not using it so nothing further is overwritten!  My 300gb C drives were both about 95% full!  With pictures, I use each of the PC's other two drives for video!  Video is not a problem as I still have the tapes and as far as I'm aware all other hard drives were not effected!  Just the C drives of both machines!  I have a 4gb high speed SD card that comes back full 5 days a week this summer!  back-up is a bit of a mission in itself!

Last night i was in catatonic shock, however today after talking to many data recovery companies, I am feeling much better!  On the bright side for wetlook fans, my C drives were so full of pictures for my sites, I had to move the new pictures for MostWet, leonmoomin.net and streetsplash to another drive!  this mainly just effects the 2006 pictures for mostwam's updates!  Damn, they were so good aswell!

Like i said I am very confident i will be able to restore them, I will be backing up even better from now on though, once bitten etc!

I do know i broke off some communications last night, so sorry about that!

That and/or a FireWire or USB external enclosure containing a regular (3.5") desktop hard drive.

Define "intermittently"... Reliability of file access, or reliability of booting (and due to the drive or the rest of the hardware)? Be careful that whatever you're doing now won't be overwriting any of the lost data or causing more damage.

I wonder what would break two drives ... power surge? And by "all data was wiped", you are 100% certain that the low-level content of the hard drive was damaged? I can't imagine a spike causing a head crash on two drives nor writing out that much nonsense. I wonder if just the file system was screwed on each.

Not a lot to go on from what you said so far :)

Leon, U mean u lost new material that u had on ur hard drives?? And is it ur hard drives that are crashing? what kind of hd's are u using? U, of all ppl should be backing up ur system drives and ur data drives both on another drive and on CD's/DVD's. U better be searching out someone who's setup to retrieve data from a failed hard drive3 cuz that's the only way ur gonna get it back. That would be a shame if u lost recent material. What about ur memory cards from ur cam's? still have those? Look into this as it's a wise purchase

I have had a major PC meltdown!

The funny thing is, I have 2 PCs, both of them went down yesterday!  The one I am using now is working again, intermitently!

All data was wiped and I am currently looking into data recovery options, however, e-mails that were received yesterday are gone, I currently have no way to get them, so if your requests were urgent, please resend them and hopefully this PC will remain working for long enough for me to get them!?

2 PCs down in one day is just NOT supposed to happen!  GRRRR!

All my sites will remain uneffected by this!  Lots of material shot this year has been lost, LOTS of it, however we are still shooting so will have material for sites.  As I also said, i am looking into data recovery options now.

Thanks

Leonmoomin
