Might as well toss in my two cents worth...
One thing could be said for the railyard as a background: it makes for some interesting artistic contrasts between background and foreground - hard vs soft, ugliness vs beauty, straight lines vs curves, chaos vs form, dead dry vs lusciously wet, etc. For the most part, I just saw it as a random collection of abstract shapes, hardly anything distracting. Now if there was stuff in the shot like discarded toilets and half-eaten hamburgers, then I would wonder about the selection of venue.
Enjoyment isn't always communicated through a smile. Sure, a smiling model (a genuine smile) is always nice to look at, but some of the most inviting or sensually suggestive expressions are anything but a smile. Your latest model does appear to be somewhat expressionless in the pics - almost like she's posing for a catalog, rather than communicating enjoyment of the situation. Still, she is very attractive.
I don't see any issue with slanty framing. Again, it's just artistic technique. I'd have a bigger bone to pick with the folks who record video with the camera on its side.
I always enjoy your work, Stormy, it's a heat wave here in Southern Ontario, hope you've had similarly warm weather and an opportunity to use it for more shoots.

By Stormy Waters - Wed 31/05/06 06:00:02 GMT OK, let me see if I have my instructions correct:
1. Shoot only girls who are smiling. 2. Don't use any slanted cameras. 3. No dumps in the background. (Q: Since it was actually an abandoned rail yard, shall I assume no rail yards either?) 4. Let this model "go". 5. Forget "it". 6. Don't do anything absolutely silly. 7. Don't do "everything" to make a picture more exciting. 8. Look more carefully through the viewer before I shoot. 9. Be more like a real master.
Thanks. I'll try to get better next time. |

By MaK - Tue 30/05/06 23:08:32 GMT That's the problem with photography - the model can't hide whether she likes it or not! She is a beauty end looks great in that sweater dress, but let her go or wait until summer. If the girl likes it, it will show - even without a big smile. Just look at this:

If the girl doesn't like it, forget it!
I know I get flamed for my comment to your photographical technique, but why use a dump as background for a beautiful girl in a nightdress, and why has slanted camera become so popular? When you shoot the picture, the brain will still regard the picture as being upright no matter how much you slant the camera, but when the picture is shown, it looks absolutely silly. Some photographers do everything to make a picture more exciting, but the real masters just looks more carefully through the viewer before they shoot!

By Stormy Waters - Tue 30/05/06 15:18:03 GMT No, you're right. Somewhere in modeling school, they must teach you not to smile. She has a fun personality. Next time we shoot, I'll see if I can bring out her smile. (Of course, she might say: you try smiling when you're freezing your butt off!!) |

By the chiller - Tue 30/05/06 14:58:22 GMT Yeah, she's got a good body & face. But if she can't smile, I can't feel anything at all. Good works though, on a high level of photography. Thanks 4 sharin' - please don't hate me now... ;) |
