There might be something out there if you know how to look. Probably the best bet is to use JMM's FLV player Flash movie, a Web page (both stored on your hard drive) and some AppleScript trickery. For example:

* Write a web page that embeds JMM's FLV player at 320x200 size (rather than full window size which visually distorts); JavaScript code will read the file URL from the URL parameters

* Use AppleScript to:

- Prompt for an FLV

- Generate a URL like (spaces not converted to %20 for clarity) file://localhost/Macintosh HD/Desktop Folder/FLV/flv.html?video=../downloads/wet.flv

- Send that URL to a browser

If you can't find anything else, I'll have a bash at the above.

I'm no Mac user myself, and I have no idea if these programs run on OS 9, but:

I've read somewhere that isquint is a good program to convert FLA to MOV: http://www.isquint.org/download.php

Also FLV Viewer should be a good Mac viewer of FLV files: http://www.thisisnotlondon.com/flv_viewer/

I am not sure I understand the problem, you mean that sites with FLV videos embedded in pages (esp. YouTube) don't work in your browser, or, do you want to play them again afterwards?

I just did something cute, I fed JMMphotos's FLV player on his site, the get-video URL of a YouTube video, and it played it. JMM's site playing a YouTube video. Woo. In iCab 3 b408. On a vintage StarMax clone. Running Mac OS 9.1.

The down side to this practice, or in fact any direct Flash playback in a browser is that you lose the original video dimensions and you get a huge, distorted video and JMMs doesn't even seem to obey aspect ratio. But what it does mean is that you can hand-roll FLV playback in 9 using some ugly tricks with saved-to-disc FLV player SWFs and custom file:// URLs :)

You might find that Macromedia's (well, Adobe's now) stand-alone Flash Player will play FLV, I have no idea. Might want to have a look. I threw one at Movie Player but it opened it as a PICT or something, an image with text in!

(And yes, I am the resident Mac OS 9 junkie)

Hi all ... does anybody know if there's any way to play .flv (flash) videos on a Mac with OS 9? Or to convert them to another format that will play on an OS 9 machine? I'm seeing this torrent of video postings lately, but while I can download them, I can't actually play any of the videos.

Yes, I know, my computer is ancient ... but I haven't got the money right now for an upgrade.

Any advice is much appreciated.
