On August 15 there is a traditional custom to go on the beach and take a bath fully clothed (well, mainly kids...often teenagers, sometimes adults), along with the "gavettoni" custom (buckets of water thrown on everyone passing by, clothed or not). AFAIK this is typical of Rome's beach (Ostia), I don't know if it's practised elsewhere. Recently, with a increasing number of immigrates (especially from eastern Asia), it's quite common to see whole families taking a bath fully clothed (mainly girls and women). Don't care too much of italians... you see... they know Americans are weird... ;o) (it's a commonplace... like Italians are only "mafia, pizza and mandolin"...). STAY AWAY FROM FOUNTAINS!!!

By Bostonwet - Thu 09/03/06 12:15:25 GMT Wife & I are planning a trip to Italy (Rome, Naples, Amalfi or ?) this summer; any thoughts on our chances to swim in clothes at Italian beaches or hotel pools? Too weird? Scorn & Ridicule? Get arrested? Or is it not uncommon?...Never been there so I`m clueless, Thanx |
