Could you please configure your web servers to transmit WMV as "Content-Type: video/x-ms-wmv" and not "text/plain"? (In Apache this is the .htaccess line AddType video/x-ms-wmv .wmv).
Firefox won't store a preference for whether to open or save any file extension such as .wmv when the MIME type is "text/plain" because I believe it can only save preferences for MIME types not extensions, and you don't really want to treat all text/plain pages as Windows Media videos or anything or stop them from being displayed in tabs. (Unless this is fixed in 1.5? I am using 1.0.7)
iCab on the Mac does not have a second-guesser and will just throw a load of rubbish on the screen if you click a link to a .wmv file or whatnot and it comes back as text/plain. I know you always say "right-click and save target as" but I don't permit browsers to play videos (as it stops me from saving a copy when I launch URLs from IM clients and chat rooms) so I can just left-click everything :)
I don't understand this at all, but .wmv seems to be the primary extension that all hosts -- at least, all Apache-based hosts -- don't pre-configure the MIME type for. .avi for example comes correctly configured with all Web hosts it seems.
