There used to be a waterslide here in Bakersfield at the old Green Valley miniature golf course that allowed people to wear anything they wanted on the slides. As a kid/teenager I used to see people go on the slides wearing shorts, jeans, other long pants, and once saw a family of very religious conservatives with all the women/girls in long black dresses and the men/boys in long black pants (they were not Amish, but probably Apostolic or Pentecostal). This place closed after the summer of 1993. I MISS THAT PLACE!!!

Editor and Elizabeth, do you remember going there back in the day?

I think it does matter where you live in the US. In California, it seems wetlook is more accepted in public pools and lakes. Most of it is T-shirts/shorts but I have seen a fair amount of jeans, sweats, and even a few dresses at local lakes, beaches and swim lagoons. Waterparks, though, are the same as in other places - anything but swimsuits is prohibited for safety reasons. I think the relaxed attitude towards wetlook out here has something to do with the large number of Latinos and Asians - people from those cultures are accustomed to wearing more stuff for "modesty" (ha!) and it seems that public swimming places cater to their eye-pleasing custom. One of the best wetlook venues in California, Perris Reservoir east of L.A., even has a sign when you enter the park stating that "swimwear must be worn" - but that rule at Perris, which is very popular with Latinos, is about as ignored as the 65mph speed limit, and as far as I can tell, the lifeguards could really care less about what you wear into the lake, as long as you don't swim too far out. Absolutely fine by me!!

Out here, if you jump in fully clothed, you'll most likely not attract much attention. You'll be part of the crowd in some places!

In books and some films you can see fetishes performed as part of the film or drama. Sometimes the fetish is seen as a cause for humour. At least these 'odd' behaviours are shown and recognised as erotic pleasures. My only sort of fetish is my love of wetlook but where is it properly shown - nowhere. Yes, you see it in pop videos and sometimes in adverts when people want to sell things but generally it is rare to get good wetlook in films. We still talk of favourite wetlook from the 1970s tv series - that should not be the case.

My theory is that there are more people into wetlook than we could ever imagine BUT they are too scared to show their little fetish. Just look at a party or at the beach when someone gets thrown in fully clothed - instantly there are loads of people coming to get a good look or even a photo. My favourite pleasure in the world is to swim with my clothes on with my girlfriend and she agrees with me. We would love to walk into our local sports centre and just jump into the pool in our street clothes but they wont let us. This is wrong. We swim in rivers and lakes in our jeans, shoes and shirts but we are keen that no one can see us. My girlfriend loves to jump into pools in her clothes but some of the things people say to her when she gets out are so unkind - why?

Who really cares what they think but we are scared of being seen to be so very different. When will we be able to choose what we want to wear in the water? A hundred years ago women did swim in their clothes - now they wear very little. I long for the day when we can walk down the beach and straight into the water in our clothes and be joined by other equally liberated people.

I suppose we have to start this thing ourselves and then others will join in.
