The most common complaint or rule that most sports centers and public pools impose....is the old "hygiene" rule...and they ban clothing cos they say it is unhygienic and discourteous to other swimmers.

The problem is...that rule is not consistantly applied.....because the biggest hygiene problem is not clothing....but HAIR. I remember the days in the UK...when all girls were REQUIRED to cover their hair with swimcaps...and you had to wash your feet and shower before and after you entered and exited the pool area....

for hygiene reasons....but then in the 1970's when men grew their hair long...all those rules went out of the window...and these days nobody wears swim caps any more.....so if long hair is allowed to be uncovered in a pool...then they should not complain about clothing too.

When it comes to waterparks...and waterslides in particular.....they will ban clothing for "safety" reasons...i.e. they have had accidents where people wearing jeans or cut offs....get caught on the slide and end up going off the slide and dropping 60 feet onto the concrete below. So they will not allow any form of clothing with belts or buckles or any protruding items that can get caught on the slide runs.

Lastly...when the poster said

How times have changed....100 years ago the women did indeed swim fully clothed at the beachs....and this taboo was finally broken in 1906 when Australian swimming champion Annette Kellerman became the first woman who dared to wear a one piece bodystocking swimsuit....and she was arrested in Boston for indecent exposure (baring her arms and legs on a public beach).

Annette's life story was re-created by Esther Williams in the 1952 movie MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID.

Hi there, I think it may have to do with the part of the state (if in the USA), you live in. Where I live most attitudes are "Who gives a shit". What kind of "unkind" comments have been said to your better half? Where do you live?

In books and some films you can see fetishes performed as part of the film or drama. Sometimes the fetish is seen as a cause for humour. At least these 'odd' behaviours are shown and recognised as erotic pleasures. My only sort of fetish is my love of wetlook but where is it properly shown - nowhere. Yes, you see it in pop videos and sometimes in adverts when people want to sell things but generally it is rare to get good wetlook in films. We still talk of favourite wetlook from the 1970s tv series - that should not be the case.

My theory is that there are more people into wetlook than we could ever imagine BUT they are too scared to show their little fetish. Just look at a party or at the beach when someone gets thrown in fully clothed - instantly there are loads of people coming to get a good look or even a photo. My favourite pleasure in the world is to swim with my clothes on with my girlfriend and she agrees with me. We would love to walk into our local sports centre and just jump into the pool in our street clothes but they wont let us. This is wrong. We swim in rivers and lakes in our jeans, shoes and shirts but we are keen that no one can see us. My girlfriend loves to jump into pools in her clothes but some of the things people say to her when she gets out are so unkind - why?

Who really cares what they think but we are scared of being seen to be so very different. When will we be able to choose what we want to wear in the water? A hundred years ago women did swim in their clothes - now they wear very little. I long for the day when we can walk down the beach and straight into the water in our clothes and be joined by other equally liberated people.

I suppose we have to start this thing ourselves and then others will join in.
