Well yeah, I guess it is hard to understand the phenomenon of the fast food chains. I personally see the use of a pizza place in my town (a suberb, with lots of commuters, with little time), so you can always call a delivery, but 6 pizza places in total (3 international and 3 Polish) in a town of 25 000 makes people wonder how they all manage.
The phenomenon of McDonald's here also amases me. I really don't like the food much. I may sometimes grab a Big Mac or Big Tasty if I have very little time, but the number of McDonald's is really huge. I don't now how they manage, but I guess Poles still like the stuff as it's "western". I thought my local McDonald's is closing down the other week, but I read that it's just being remodeled and will be 60% bigger when it reopens so I guess they must be doing good business here :-D Anyway, we might be the only country without Burger King :-D Some time ago they were all closed and changed to KFC :-D
Anyway, for those who like to study international corporations Poland is quite a unique place. For instance we have the highest number of hypermarket/supermarket chains, each with just about 20 stores. And though analysts say say this is strange and can't last long it's been on for long no chain want's too leave and the crappy American Wal-Mart wants to come and crowd it even more.

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Sun 04/12/05 17:43:32 GMT It would surprise me to see all the major US fast food chains in the smallest European towns. Not because of any notion of how "developed" it may or may not be, but because of the economics of supply and demand. Does everyone in the world crave Big Macs and Pizza Hut pizza so much and so often that a local outlet will be viable in every last nook and cranny of our whole planet?

By Ikarus Studio - okmkm@wp.pl Sun 04/12/05 15:31:45 GMT Actually I tend not to believe anyone these days. Especially movies, news programms and newspapers. Why? Because I live in Poland. And the shit that is in papers / TV in other country about us is so close to the truth as Warsaw to Ulan Bator. Most programs (and even encyclopedias) illustrate us as a country with horse drawn carts and no modern infrastracture. The effect is hilarious. During the last years my friends from the US and Canada came to see me and they took photos in front of every McDonald's and shopping mall, order Pizza from Pizza Hut just because they didn't believe it was possible in my small town, taped Polish MTV and VH1 and even took a Polish Big Mac, KFC Twister, can of coke and other "goods" home with them to proove that yes, they can be purchased in Poland and did other stupid things. That shows what "gossip" and "stereotypes" about other countries are worth and shows why I don't believe anyone except my family and friends and my own eyes :-D

By Ikarus Studio - okmkm@wp.pl Sun 04/12/05 02:39:10 GMT Anyway watching videos & DVDs is a strange idea. Didn't know it was practised anywhere outside Saudi Arabia and maybe some other Muslim countries. Also Canada seems quite a tolerant country, so this comes as an even bigger shock for me. Poland (or some parts of it) is still very religious in comparison to the west and our customs only check the contant (on a scanner without opening) and never view anything.

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Sat 03/12/05 22:13:07 GMT too right!
I'm no longer sure which it was, but one of the videos I purchased a few years ago WAS opened and partially viewed. As best I can recall, it really wouldn't have come anywhere close to the Canadian definition of obscenity or pornography. Unless the "agent" was one of us, I'm sure he/she would have been pretty disappointed. Nevertheless, I think that all in the name of security and public protection, our customes/postal service don't have much respect for personal privacy.

By Nigel - nigel@wetlook.com Sat 03/12/05 10:50:46 GMT Website: www.wetlook.com The Canadian Postal Service/Customs has always been problematic, as most wetlook producers know ! As far as I know, it's the ONLY country that insists that the return address for parcels is on the front of the package, rather than the back.
This was already a pain in the arse, but NOW I have had a DVD "REFUSED ENTRY" because my return label has "No Sender name in French or English"...
To not hint at the contents, my return labels are always just:
PO Box 3430 COLCHESTER CO4 0ZU ENGLAND
But now, for Canadian customers, I am going to have to put a dummy 'name' before the PO Box - and pay again to get it re-sent - how pathetic !
Other producers beware !
Does anyone from Canada have any idea why their Customs/Postage service is so screwed up ?
