Maybe the driver for the computer's video card needs to be updated.

I've had my Compaq for over a year now, and even when I booted it up for the first time, the driver that was installed was not the latest.

It shouldnt have anything to do with your dial-up connection - that only determines the speed at which you can download, not the quality, although if it is only large images that are troublesome it may be the machine timing-out because of the slow connection. 256mb RAM is more than enough for the internet, I have a machine that's only on 64mb.

Try looking in <display properties> (right click on the desktop, go to settings) and make sure the resolution is the maximum the monitor can handle. If, when you say you have a flat screen you mean a TFT, unlike the bulky CRTs, this will make a difference.

Hope this is of help

Anytime I try to look at any high res picture (anything bigger than approx. 1000X1000 pixels), it looks like crap on my screen.  The image pixellates and looks like that old "Electric Avenue" video by Eddie Grant.  When I used to use the internet at the library (yes folks, I am the "banned at the library" guy, and the library in question is the Kern County Library), high res pictures always displayed properly.  I have a Compaq Presario SR1500NX computer with 256 megs of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive.  My monitor is an Envision flat screen, not sure of the model.  Did I buy a computer with weak video capability?  Is this monitor low res?   Is high res impossible with dial up?  Is there some setting I could adjust to make high res pictures display properly (I know almost no computer tech stuff).
