Sorry, but music added to a video DOES bring copyright issues. The reason is this: if you SELL a video, the music contained on it becomes a commercial use of that music simply because the video is being sold. If I'm not mistaken, all the major WAM producers add "royalty free" music to their productions. The idea is that for a one-time fee paid to the originator of that music, the WAM producer acquires the rights to unlimited use of the music in any of their productions.
I know of one producer (perhaps the same one VC is referring to) who's video includes well-recognized popular music by way of ambient sound emanating from a boom box. I'm sure the legality of this approach is at least questionable. He might be wise to check into the situation.
Something else which comes to mind: illegal duplication of videos. It occurs to me that by copying a video, you are not only inviting legal action from the video producer, but you would probably also be violating the copyright of the music producer... the WAM producer bought rights to copy/distribute their music, you didn't. If you don't care about the rule of law, I don't suppose it really makes much difference to you how many people you run afoul of, but I think their is potential for trouble to come your way from directions you may not have expected.

In reply to Message (1801) Copyright infringement
By VeniceCaro - venicecaro@yahoo.com Tue 14/01/03 15:55:17 GMT While some of you may know of me, I've never posted anything here but I just saw something that I can't hold my silence about. A friend of mine ordered some wetlook tapes from a video producer and showed them to me. I was fairly disturbed by them because they had regular copyrighted popular music throughout them. Now I'm sure if someone bought one of every different tape this producer sells and then made copies and sold them, the producer would be incensed and scream piracy. However he would probably never take into consideration that his crime is the same. Has anyone else noticed this and has it bothered anyone else? Now the producer may argue that the music was just playing in the background but even if that excuse is used, it's still stealing copyrighted material. I hope this isn't a trend in the wetlook world and I hope he examines his ethics for his subsequent volumes.
