i found the number one problem with leather clothes, skirts and trousers particularly was the dye comming off the back and stainnig your legs, happened in river and chl. pool as for leather shoes not any real problems other than them getting tight and stiff (LEAVE IT!!) when they dry out. I do have a couple of pairs of high heel boots i get soaked in after clubbing and they go stiff when dry. so what i do is before i go out in them next time is to hold them upside down and run hot water over the outside so the leather that softens them and they are comfy to wear, and dry, if you walk in soaked shoes and boots for very long periods at a time (hours) they weaken and break up. As for protecting them first, never bothered, it would only really be of use if you were wearing them normaly, what we do to them in the wam community is like stock car racing for shoes, run'em till the wreck.
just take notes on which brands last the best.
