Good question! The lighting is always the trickiet part. The easiest way is to shoot in the hour before sunset--everything is soft and golden then. An overcast day is pretty easy, too, except the color isn't very warm. But at least you don't get harsh, dark shadows. Midday sun is the hardest. I've learned to position the model to take best advantage of the sun, to use fill flash (as little as possible), and reflectors to light the dark side of a model's face. Sometimes I can shoot in the shade, or in filtered sunlight through trees and that softens a harsh sun. In the midday sun, a polarizing filter helps. Shooting against the sun often produces the best result at midday, but it requires a flash or a reflector, and the willingness to overexpose the background to properly expose the model's face.
You're typically seeing shots that turn out well. There are three crappy ones for every one that is acceptable.
Secrets? I don't think there are any. Most of this is the result of trial and error. |

I have been admiring your shoots for some time now.
Tell us the secret how you get the lighting so perfect in your shoots or a web site for dummy's like myself.
Regards, Ross. |
