Hi JJ

Well....the good news is...my message prompted a fan to email me to say that he HAS the Miss Kitty water trough dunking scene from GUNSMOKE...and that it definitely does exist (on an early black and white episode).

Yeah...I figured that the BEACH PARTY scenes must have come from a cast party and not from the actual film. Thats life for you...i.e. the cast party looks more interesting that the actual film was. I am not aware of anybody who used ti regularly film private pool parties in Hollywood...though Buster Keaton is known to have always filmed his private pool parties and one of his most famous films was actually filmed at his mansion. Actor Joseph Cotton was famous for throwing pool parties where many well dressed ladies always ended up in the pool at his mansion....no films of that are known to exist but there are several still photos of those events in some Hollywood magazines.

I am sure we would all like to find all those pool party scenes from those 1960's Cannes Film festival events.....cos in those days...the way a starlet grabbed attention from reporters was by jumping into the pool (like Angelina Jolie at the Golden Globes did)...and in the 1960's in Cannes you grabbed attention by wearing a clinging dress and stockings in the pool.....yummie. But these days in Cannes everything is so "blatant"...so the starlets just parade naked on the beach...trying to impress people by showing them how much silicone one can pump into a human body.

The real "mystery" to me is....that pool and scenery on all those Mike Douglas show pictures from 1967.....purportedly taken at Cypress Gardens....cos I have been to Cypress Gardens many times since the mid 1970's...and there ain't no such pool or no such wide open flat area like that at Cypress Gardens....thats a fact. Even if there "was" a pool and open area like that in 1967...and they bulldozed it .....even today...there is no wide open scenery like that at Cypress Gardens (and I was last there in 2001). My guess is....those events were not actually staged at Cypress Gardens...but might have been held at a nearby country club or something. Anyway...you will not find any pool like that at Cypress Gardens. The only pool they have there is the "Florida Map Pool"...which is a small pool built for Esther Williams while she was making her movie EASY TO WED there. That pool still exists today.

The same thing is true for all those Annapolis Naval Academy pics on your site....where it used to be a great tradition that on graduation day all the cadets were greeted by their girlfriends dressed in their best dresses, and would all celebrate in the fountains...

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/07/wfscrap7.html

There are pics from these events in the 1960's and 70's on various websites like corbis....e.g....but these are only from the 1970's. I did some research to see if these events still occur today...and even sent a customer of mine who lives in Annapolis to check things out...and he walked all over the campus for me...and found that the fountain in all those pics no longer exists today. It was bulldozed about 15 years ago...to make space for a new building....so that fountain tradition is now gone forever...and today all you have is the famous hat tossing scenes etc.

BTW....if you want to search for something....look for some stills of Julie Andrews being wetted down over and over again...for her famous wet scene from THE SOUND OF MUSIC. About 20 years ago I was browsing a bookstore and came across these pics of director Robert Wise pouring buckets of water over Julie...cos he said she did not look wet enough...so after each take they had to pour more water over her. I was not able to copy those pics...and have yet to be able to find them on the internet....but they are out there somewhere.

Have fun

MK

Hi Mark:

Wow! If this is your "quick status update", I can hardly wait for the long version! I commend you on your attention to detail and thoroughness. Your skills and knowledge are a definite asset to the enjoyment experienced by the members of the Wetlook Community; especially me.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/27/wfscrap27.html

If I'm not mistaken, these magazine article photos were taken at a cast party. I wonder if anyone back then took any "home movies" of some of these wild Hollywood parties that often ended up in the pool. A collection of those would make an interesting video especially with the period dresses.

Mike Douglas

I would expect that by the placement of the TV cameras, that they likely do not pick up much wetlook as we like it, but would emphasize the jump into the pool, if that. Refer to: http://www.vintagewet.com/temp/md01.jpg Also, in each of the 8x10s where the on-deck TV camera is shown, it is directed on MD not on those in the pool.  Refer to: http://www.vintagewet.com/temp/md02.jpg

These two are magazine publicity shots showing the preparation required to get the wet to look just right so they can cut it out or hide it in dim lighting later <G>. It is nice to know the films they are associated with.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrapd/01/flashad.jpg

This one I remember from a 70's photography magazine ad for Pentax.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mp/a09/v93534.jpg

These are all publicity stills (not frame grabs from the film) that were displayed at the front of the theater behind glass to show what was currently playing and what was coming next as enticers. I remember even as a kid being frustrated when the great shot was not in the film, not just wetlook either.

This is not a fake, but is newsprint quality so I have attempted to reduce the dot effect and resharpen the image. This is one of a batch that I did when I didn't realize that my monitor was dying and came out a mess. I will redo it this week.

Thanks again for the input. I'll update the site with this info together with anyone else's.

Hi JJ

I did a quick status update on "the unknown, the rare, the long lost, and the misleading" as it pertains to the great wetlook pics you have on your site for old movies and tv shows. Here is my current update and insights. I can identify some things and give you some insights on what may exist (on celluloid or videotape) and what probably does not exist. Here are my notes....the reason I am posting this publicly is that hopefully some other experts, film buffs and sleuths can identify more things than I can. I picked on some of the great pics that are mysteries or long

lost or not indentified... where I can offer some insights..

Here goes...from your site...

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/27/wfscrap27.html

This scene definitely does not exist in the final cut of the film BEACH PARTY. The only person who might be able to

shed more light on this would be director William Asher (Elizabeth Montgomery's husband). Unless this film gets

re-leased on DVD and "deleted scenes" are restored...this scene is not on any known print of the film I have ever

seen.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/29/wfscrap29.html

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/30/wfscrap30.html

Good news/Bad News. Good news = Roy & Wetfan from Florida and I have discussed these great dunking scenes for over a

decade....i.e. the week the the MiKe Douglas show went on the road and did "simple simon" into the pool for 4-5 shows that week in 1967. We had given up on these scenes as being "lost" (we thought the videotape had been erased or recycled). A friend of mine (Hurley) actually wrote to Mike Douglas 10 years ago...and Mike was kind enough to write him a personal letter...stating that he did not think those old tapes existed...and he did not have them. BUT THE LATEST UPDATE IS...I have just found out that KING WORLD (Merv Griffen enterprises) now has all the old tapes of the Mike Douglas show from 1964 to 1980. Only a few of the shows have been converted from the old 2inch format videotape to DVD....but they are working on converting more of these old shows in future months. There is an update on this at Mike's website. http://www.themikedouglasshow.com/   The bad news is....they are only releasing screening tapes to professionals in the broadcasting industry at this time. They will not release shows to the general public.

So...anybody on this forum who has media credentials....please help order this for us. Those screening tapes are

expensive...i.e. $200 per tape...and they did those dunking shows all that week...5 shows...so it would cost $1000 to acquire those 5 tapes....but if somebody has media credentials and wants to assist...I will finance the purchase of those tapes for you.  Anyway...those scenes you see on the pics are not "lost" as we thought....they are sitting in Merv Griffen's vault.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/18/101.jpg

Nice pic of Rita Moreno....but there is no such thing like this that is enacted in the movie DESIREE....thats a fact. Whatever they did...it was cut from the film.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrap/18/103.jpg

Likewise...nice pic of Anne Francis...and it took me 15 years to track down a copy of LYDIA BAILEY (which has never

been released on video and never will air on tv again...because of the same reasons AMOS AND ANDY never get

shown....the content of the movie is racist and offensive to minorities and definitly not politically correct to show these days). Anyway...I found a copy of the film, and there is no such scene as depicted in the pic (cos the movie is a period piece about plantations and slaves in the deep south)...and there are some wet scenes with Anne in period dress wading thru the swamp, but nothing like what you see in that pic.

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrapd/01/flashad.jpg

Gee...this girl sure looks like Jenny Agutter

http://www.vintagewet.com/vwa/scrapd/03/bow.jpg

and that is definitely Sharon Tate.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a04/wfscrap19.html

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a04/wfscrap20.html

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a04/wfscrap21.html

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a04/wfscrap22.html

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a04/wfscrap23.html

Another case of GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS: The good news is....this Sophia Loren tv special was long thought to be lost

or they erased the tapes (cos it was shot on videotape not film), and a copy of this show DOES exist. I tracked it

down and they have a copy of it at the UCLA Film and Television Archives in California. The bad news is...UCLA

reports that the ONLY videotape copy they have of this show is in extremely fragile condition...and the tape is

disintegrating. So...they have it under lock down and will not let it be screened....cos it needs somebody to restore and digitally remaster it before it degrades any further. Such restoration projects cost from $50,000 to

$100,000...so it is unlikely that any tv distributor will want to pay to restore it. The ONLY hope that show has....is that it also featured Peter Sellers as a guest star...and people are always looking for long lost Peter

Sellers footage....so hopefully some Peter Sellers restoration society will finance the restoration of this tv

special. Otherwise...it remains under lock and key at UCLA.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap/a07b/V-8-32-05.jpg

This Cindy Carol scene comes from GIDGET GOES TO ROME (1964) and DOES exist...it is shown on tv all the time and is

available on video.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gidget_goes_to_rome/

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/wm/a04/a04.html

Another one for the "it don't exist in the movie" category. This scene does not exist in any known copy of GODS

LITTLE ACRE I have ever seen. Another one of those you should wait for a DVD release....so see if somebody adds some

deleted scenes as extra features to a future DVD release.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mp/a08/v93524.jpg

This is the best and the most frustrating pic on JJ's site.....gee...I wish somebody could help us identify who this

actress is, and then we can track down the film. I cannot put my finger on it (well...I can...but thats another

story). This is such a great pic...If somebody can tell me the actors name or the actress...we can track this down.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mp/a08/v93525.jpg

Another great pic....from a long lost film that has never been released or aired (Happy Go Lucky, from 1943).

Featuring Mary Martin (Larry Hagman's mom). The real mystery is....how the heck did Sean Penn manage to get into this scene...ha ha.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mp/a09/v93534.jpg

Another great pic from a mystery film we cannot identify...i.e. who is this actress?...it's on the tip of me !!! .... The only clues we have are...the copyright notice on the pic...i.e. it was a United Artists film released in 1947.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a07/v93928.jpg

That appears to be a scene from Fellini's SATYRICON.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a08/v93747.jpg

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a08/v93906.jpg

Ah yes.....this is what you call..."the needle in a haystack game"....i.e. trying to track down a particular episode

of GUNSMOKE....is a VERY daunting task. If you tape it every day....your odds are 633 to 1....cos there were 233 x 30 minute shows and 400 x 1hr shows....good luck on that one. All I can say is...I have seen numerous episodes over the years, and never seen any such scene like this...and no other collector I known has seen it either. The episodes ran from 1955 to 1975. The show airs on numerous stations the USA and Canada every day. If you wish to search for this scene...the only clue I can offer you is....look at the age of Miss Kitty in this scene. She appears to look quite youngish...not as middle aged as she appeared in the later seasons in the late 60's. So...this must have happened during an early 60's episode, and not one of the latter episodes in the 1970's.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a10/v93629.jpg

I can identify this un named clip....and it does exist in the film and is shown on tv all the time. This comes from

the 1956 Laraine Day movie TOY TIGER....co starring Jeff Chandler (the famous crossdresser whom Esther Williams broke off her engagement with....cos she kept catching him wearing her clothes...ha ha). The scene in the film is much better than the pic...cos it is in glorious technicolor.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a11/v94015.jpg

Is this pic for real....cos it looks faked...like the girl was cut and pasted onto the pic ??

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a12/v93625.jpg

I can identify this unnamed pic....this is from a Mario Lanza movie....and I have this scene. It is in color. The

title of the film escapes me right now...but I know I have this scene.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mm/a12/v93703.jpg

This is from the 1938 film called SUEZ. The actual scene in the film is even better than then the pics, cos when

Annabella exits the lake in her wet white blouse you can see right thru it and she is not wearing a bra, and this is

as good as a Bo Derek see thru scene. You have a low quality blurry pic of the exit scene in a different section on

your site...here.

http://www.vintagewet.com/wfa/scrap2/mp/a07/v93402.jpg

If you rent the video you can see those puppies quite clearly.

Thats all folks.

If anybody discovers old movie or tv stills on the web or in books or magazines...please send them to JJ so we can

archive all these things and search for them.

MK

ps...I watched that movie "The Notebook" last night....great wetlook scene...but I could not figure it out. Not only were there no notebooks in the film...it was a period piece set in the 1940's... before personal computers had even been invented.....talk amongst yourselves.
