It is very difficult to say something general about the wetlook in the past. The situation depends clearly much on the place you live. I am Dutch, and I saw my first wetlook in Germany in the seventies. It was in Cologne. A girl was dunked in the fountain on Dom square on a hot day. It was great. Her clothes were not at all typical summer clothes, although it was quite hot. Jeans (the jeans of those days were much heavier than the current ones, which are in a way not anymore typical jeans...), t-shirt and a sleeved shirt. Much better was still to come on the same day, when a girl in jeans and a white shirt jumped in herself. We saw her sitting on a wall, sexy, her shirt transparent, just as "anynomous" shortly before remarked, "giving not a damn" about her surroundings. I believe there was really more spontameous outdoor wetlook in Western Europe in that time. Young people, who just did it. But nowadays there is much more indoor outlook, people who get wet all together on parties. But again, this much more in Germany than in by example, Holland. In Turkey, where I live nowadays, there was a fantastic wetlook boom around 1990. It was fashionable for the middle class then to jump in on parties etc. And women did definitely to look sexy as well. Luxury hotels like the Hilton even asked their customers to take with them an extra set of clothes, in case they would be thrown in. But nowadays, you see much less wetlook in Turkey. |

By paul - pauldavis@safe-mail.net Fri 11/03/05 22:01:26 GMT There was more wetlook in the 70s and 80s and I think it was because of the following: 1) many girls had only one swimsuit, so when that swimsuit was not available they swam with shorts and a shirt, and it was no big deal. 2) most guys wore cut-offs, or swimtrunks that looked like cut-offs, so many girls followed and and wore cut-offs and a bikini top in the water. 3) there were more dual purpose beach areas. For example many girls went to the Crystal Beach amusment park for the rides, and ended up in the water, many with shorts, some with jeans on. It would be rare for any girl to plan to swim with jeans on. 4) rainwear: most girls had switched from traditional rainwear to plastic slickers by the mid 70s. It seems that when slicker use died out by the late 80s wet look at the beach also wet down. I don't know why this happened.
