That brings up another issue. I always thought it arrogant that we U.S. citizens call just ourselves Americans. Seems to me that anybody living in North or South America is an "American" as much as we are, maybe more considering many of us have primarily European blood, as opposed to many in North and South America that have ancestors going back much further on this continent.

Bills passed through parliament require the Queen's signature to become law... it's the final step in the process. Technically, it gives her the ultimate power of veto, but practically, I believe the power is never exercised, leaving her role essentially ceremonial.

You folks in the US of A have your own version of royalty, with plenty of its own scandal. You call it "Hollywood". England has (or has had) kings and queens, princess and princesses, dukes, earls, viscounts, etc., you have superstars (film, tv, and music) and supermodels. Theses are people in the public eye, revered by the "common man", sometimes with more money than sense (e.g. Michael Jackson).

We in Canada are kind of caught in the middle... we have closer ties to the UK than you, and still have some connection to the monarchy, but at the same time we get caught up in Hollywood (we don't have our own counterpart... all the biggest and brightest in Canadian entertainment go south).

My family quit dealing with the whole royalty thing early, we had a signer on the declaration, and as family folklore has it, a participant in the Boston Tea Party :). But I still feel ties to Britain. Pretty funny how close the two countries are after having had a war over our independance. Excuse my ignorance, but does the royal family still have political power beyond just being influential figureheads? Who runs the place, the Queen? Tony Blair? Parliament? Who gets elected, and who do you get no choice over?

Since Prince Charles is going to marry the divorced Camilla Parker Bowles, will he still be the next king? Is she royalty, or is she a commoner? If he can't be king, who will be king, his son or his brother?
