They lost their empire... which used to include Canada, Australia, and India. (We're part of the Commonwealth, not an empire)...
Having lost all that, I suppose clinging to the monarchy is their way of saving face. Though it is nice to have a ceremonial head of state... just not sure it's such a good idea with the likes of Adrienne Clarkson and her now infamous spending habits.
