IMO, there are two areas to discuss here...white top-half clothes, and white bottom-half clothes. I'll be brave and say that I think everybody will be happy seeing a white shirt/blouse/T etc becoming see-through when wet.....but the difference of opinion comes when we talk about the 'bottom-half' clothes.
Try to get a look at a girl wearing PROPER white denim jeans....and you will do well to see through them even when they are wet. It's a shame that it seems that all wetlook producers whose girls wear white trousers/pants seem to go with the thin cotton material, which of course will go see-through as soon as it gets wet. And I have long suspected that they have (wrongly) assumed that that is what everybody wants to see happen to white jeans/skirt etc...because it's not.
This subject was discussed a couple of years ago somewhere else in our community, and I stated my likes then, as I am doing now, and there were a good few who agreed with me.
The scientific explanations may well be true for the thin cotton stuff, but not for 'real' white jeans
