i took a lifeguard training when i was a teenager, and part of the test was to pull up a "dummy" from underwater...in a murky lake, so i couldn't really see very well, but just a blurry shape...

Like Silas said, some people actually DO sink...

I know from personal experience when someone drowns they can sink to the bottom of the pool and stay there.

I meant, why do they use something that sinks to the bottom of the pool in the first place?   I assume that the idea is to simulate rescuing a real person.    But a real person wouldn't be at the bottom of the pool, since humans float.    And a dummy which sinks wouldn't feel like a person who floats when its being towed along, would it?    Is there some reason for using a dummy which is not identical in density to a human body?

Safety. A real person canīt stay that long on the bottom of a pool without diving gear

The ladies in jeans doing lifesaving exercises (?tests) are great.    One thing puzzles me, though; why do they use a dummy which is obviously more dense than water, and so the 'rescuers' have to dive to get it; a real person, even if unconscious, would normally stay on or near the surface.    Presumably the dummy also feels different to a person while they are towing it through the water, for the same reason.     Any ideas why they do it that way, anybody?
