Yes Leon...thats correct. Stormy Weather (1943, Lena Horne) -- I have that scene repeated on several cliptapes...but it is actually not that great. There are no girls dancing in the rain...it is merely a brief 15 second shot of some girls in satin dresses hiding under a walkway and creeping away under the rain...
The shot is actually an "illuision"...one of those old Hollywood tricks...that some tv and movie producers still use to this day...i.e. the rain is not actually "on' the girls directly. The rain machine is carefully positioned in FRONT of the girls...and is in between the girls and the cameraman...so...you "think" it is raining on the girls...when actually the rain is in FRONT of the girls...and the girls barely get wet cos they are behind where the main water source is.....old hollywood trick #101...not good wetlook.
I can do that trick digitally in my video editing system...i.e. I have a plugin that creates a fake rain overlay on top of any video I capture...and thats baloney...so I don't use that effect.
Probably the best wetlook rain dance I have seen is in the 1942 Carole Landis movie THE POWERS GIRL (uk title = Hello Beautiful)...where the movie starts out with an outdoor jitterbug dance party...and then it starts to pour with rain and all the jitterbug dancers dance in the rain. That film has never been released on video or aired on tv...it took me 10 years to track down a copy of that film from a collector.

By leonmoomin - leonmoomin@ntlworld.com Fri 12/11/04 03:17:38 GMT Hi mark
I remember an old B/W film called "Sormy Weathers", I think? With the song of the same title, it is a vague memory and have only seen it once many years ago, I seem to remember a much better rain dance sequence than the one in singing in the rain, several girls in dresses dancing in the rain.
Do you have that film, is it as good as I remember it?
Cheers

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 12/11/04 02:50:24 GMT Thats correct....first clip is Dennis Quaid (Meg Ryan' ex) and Bess Armstrong from JAWS 3D (made at Seaworld)....and "Fred Stairs"...thats hilarious....don't you mean "Jean Kelly"...ha ha
Actually for trivia fans....while we all remember the Gene Kelly version the best, that was NOT the original version of that song either. It was first composed by Arthur Freed in the 1920's and debuted on film in the 1929 movie "Hollywood Review of 1929"...and Gene Kelly based his version on the 1929 version. Actually..the 1929 version was better...because it featured chorus girls in the rain, and that was basically copied in the 1935 movie FOLIES BERGERE in their "Rythym of the Rain" dance number. The Gene Kelly version was no good for wetlook fans...cos Gene Kelly took out all the dancing girls...and turned it into an ego trip for himself instead.

By Wet Dude - Thu 11/11/04 16:33:25 GMT The first clip is from Jaws 3D I think. And you mean a spoof of Gene Kelly's Singin' In the Rain, not Fred Astaire. |
